apa essay spacing The American Psychological Association (APA) has produced a publication manual that includes all of the etd thesis rules that you need to method, know to produce a manuscript that conforms to etd thesis, their standards. This manual, now in the 5th edition, has been accepted as the by car essay gold standard by submission many academic disciples. Other common academic style manuals include The Chicago Manual of Style and The Modern Language Association Style Manual, (also known as Chicago and MLA). If you are a graduate student, it is a really good idea to purchase the style manual accepted by the majority of the is the root evil faculty in submission your department. In Special Education at UNM, you should purchase the APA manual.

It is available in the campus bookstore. Make sure you get the most recent (5th) edition. Actually, these manuals have a real reason for bind my thesis ireland being, other than driving students crazy. By providing a uniform way of presenting information, these style guides assist the writer in preparing their papers in a manner that will be understood by etd thesis most readers. For example, because the information needed for a reference to be complete is specified, readers are assured that they can obtain a copy of a particular cited work themselves, if they are interested. Without ALL of the parts of a journey by car essay a citation, references can be near impossible to track down.

Each style manual has many, many rules, most of which the vast majority of students do not need to learn in detail. There are, however, a few major areas that you should pay attention to: page margins type styles and fonts spacing indentation headers quotations citations of sources references plagiarism reducing bias in language In addition, style manuals are terrific sources of general information about etd thesis writing, including the content and organization of an academic paper and the appropriate expression of ideas in written academic discourse. For students using lots of statistics or tables and graphs, the APA Manual also has clearly written directions for including these components in a manuscript. The following are just a FEW of the most important rules. For more information, check out the manual (make sure you get the 6th edition) and/or go to the APA website. Format : All papers should be double-spaced throughout , (including the reference section) with one inch margins all around. Do not add extra lines between paragraphs or sections. The font should be 12 pt and you need to use a serif type style (with the hooks and curly-cues), such as Times or Courier. All paragraphs should be indented half an inch, NOT five spaces.

Only one space should be added between the precalculus period at submission the end of a sentence and by car, the first letter of the next. Headings : These tell the reader how your text is organized -- they are VERY important. You need to decide how many levels of headings you will need, before you can figure out what they look like. For example, many college papers will have at submission least two levels. My Thesis Ireland? The first level includes the major categories, such as the introduction, whatever you name the body of your paper, and the conclusion or discussion (or both).

You may then also want several sub-categories in the body of your text. Etd Thesis? For example, if you are writing about precalculus homework theories of second language development, you would use a sub heading for each of the major theories you discuss. If you then break any of etd thesis these categories into cover, smaller groups, you would need at least one additional level. If you are using only etd thesis, two levels, the first level of heading (i.e. introduction) should be centered in upper and lower case letters. The next level should be flush to the left margin (NOT indented), italicized, in upper and cover letter officer, lower case letters. If you use a third level, that heading should be indented, italicized, with only the etd thesis first letter of the first word in upper case AND it should be followed with a period, after which you write your first sentence, without using a paragraph return. If you use more than three levels of a journey essay headings, you need to check the APA manual for the correct format. Quotations and citations are extremely important. These rules help you to submission, clearly identify where you got your information. The reader needs to know whether you obtained the information from some source or whether that provided is your own interpretation. If you do not make this clear, you could run into concerns about plagiarism.

To avoid this, you absolutely need to indicate WHO said WHAT, WHEN and WHERE. When you include information from an the case method outside source, you will typically either 1) paraphrase the etd thesis submission original author#8217;s words or 2) use a direct quote, writing down EXACTLY what was written in the original text. To avoid plagiarizing when you paraphrase, you need to change both the content AND form of the information you read -- it is not enough to shuffle the words around (from passive to active voice, for example) or substitute synonyms within the study method same sentence structure. If you are having difficulty paraphrasing something without falling into this trap, you should consider including direct quotes, (which you indicate with quotations marks), from the material in etd thesis question. With direct quotes you MUST include the page number(s) of the cover assistant original source, along with the author(s) last name(s) and the year of the publication. The full reference then must be included in the reference section. If you are able to paraphrase the information, or you just want to submission, refer to a work in general, you only need to include the author(s) last name(s) and the year of publication (and then, of course, include the full citation in the case method the reference section too).

There are several ways you can do in-text citations, such as in the following examples: According to Smith (1989), life can be pretty exciting. Life can sometimes be pretty exciting (Smith, 1989). Yahoo! (Smith, 1989, p. 3). Talking about life, Smith (1989) said Yahoo! (p. 3). Reference list: The reference list includes only and all of the sources you actually cited in the text of your paper. This is different from a bibliography, which refers to all of the etd thesis submission sources which you consulted to write a paper, regardless of whether you actually cited them in the text of ap english your paper. For most academic papers, you should include a reference list, not a bibliography. Submission? Formatting your references: Your reference list starts on a new page and should have the precalculus homework word 'References' centered at the top of the page (not bold, not underlined, and only the first letter capitalized). All references must be double spaced. Do not add an extra line in between references.

The new (6th) edition of the APA manual has gone back to the old style of using hanging indents, which means that the first line of each reference goes all the submission way to the left margin, with the following lines of each reference indented. You can set this up on your computer by using the ruler at precalculus homework the top of etd thesis your screen. Drag the bottom triangle to the right by 1/2 an inch, leaving the top triangle all the way to the left (the opposite my thesis ireland, of how you set your paragraph indents). That should make all of your author names stick out to the left, while indenting the etd thesis rest of each reference. Where do I put the periods and commas? The APA manual provides the format for bind my thesis each kind of citation you might use, such as journal articles, web sites, conference presentations, etc. You need to etd thesis, look up the correct format in the manual. It is really important for students taking graduate level classes to own a current copy of the APA manual . For an precalculus example of a reference section formatted in etd thesis APA that includes journal articles, chapters from cover officer assistant, edited books, and authored books, click here* For up-to-date information about citating electronic sources (i.e. Etd Thesis Submission? web pages) follow this link: http://www.apastyle.org/elecref.html. This does not, however, replace the cover officer need to own your own copy of the etd thesis APA manual. Bind My Thesis Ireland? resume patent format This application claims the benefit of Provisional Application No. Submission? 60/215,709, filed Jul. 03, 2000. FIELD OF INVENTION. This invention relates generally to the field of database management and, specifically, to cover letter assistant, the management of resumes received by etd thesis employers. BACKGROUND OF INVENTION. Employers have long been confronted with the precalculus homework problem of how to manage the receipt of resumes from persons seeking employment with the employer. This problem becomes even greater as the employer's business starts expanding, causing its need for more employees to increase. Similarly, as the number of employees increases, the employee attrition rate will normally increase, giving rise to the need to hire new employees.

Recently, several database management companies have developed and are marketing computer based systems that attempt to manage the submission inflow of resumes in order to enable the employer to more efficiently process the resumes and the information contained in the resumes. These resume database managers typically create extensive databases for an employer that are used to organize the resume information or content into various categories, which may be related to employment positions which need to study method, be filled, or may be archived so that the applicant's resume information can be retrieved at some later time when the need arises. Although the resume database managers perform their resume management functions quite well, a significant limitation in their usefulness is etd thesis submission, that the resumes' content must be manually inputted into of money root essay the computer based system by a data entry person who enters the information contained within the resume into a resume data entry form. This limitation arises due to the fact that resumes are not organized or formatted in submission, the same manner, and the type and extent of information included within resumes varies considerably. The data entry limitation has become even more significant now that large volumes of both solicited and unsolicited resumes are received by employers over the Internet every day. At the a journey essay present time, there are over a hundred different Internet Job Board sites that job seekers can use to create and post a resume on-line and to send the resume over the Internet to a prospective employer who is etd thesis, identified on the site. Since each Job Board site requires the job applicant to create his/her resume using the the case Job Board's resume format, a certain amount of resume format consistency has been established on the Internet. However, since each of the Job Boards have created their own proprietary resume format, there is no uniformity as between the etd thesis submission numerous Job Board sites. It is the goal of the my thesis present invention to overcome the data entry limitations of the resume based data management systems. SUMMARY OF INVENTION.

The present invention comprises a computer based system and method for etd thesis submission, creating a standardized or normalized resume format, extracting information from the normalized resume, and automatically inputting the precalculus homework information into a resume database management system. Initially, a parcel identifier database is created based upon the different types of Internet Job Board resume formats being used. It has been determined that each Job Board resume format contains a unique piece of information or character sequence referred to in this Specification as a “parcel identifier” which can be used to identify a particular resume as having been created using a specific Job Board. Accordingly, the parcel identifier database is created by storing in the memory of the computer system a list of unique parcel identifiers. Further, each parcel identifier in the database is associated with a unique Job Board resume template, also stored in a Job Board database. Etd Thesis Submission? In this regard, it has also been determined that each Job Board resume's format can be identified or characterized by homework certain keywords and certain information associated with a specific keyword. As a result, each unique Job Board template is predetermined or created by specifying a list of etd thesis submission keywords and associating one or more resume field names with each keyword.

The keyword identifies a specific resume heading or subheading (e.g., “Education”) and one or more possible field names (e.g., “High School,” “College,” and “Degree”) are associated with the information or content contained within the heading or subheading. The possible resume field names will correlate to the specific field names that the cover letter for probation assistant database management system assigns to the same information. Once the etd thesis parcel identifier database has been created, the system's computer program is ready to process resumes that are received by an employer from a Job Board. The program searches each line of the resume to determine if any character sequence within a line matches a parcel identifier in cover letter, the parcel identifier database. If a match is found, the program also identifies from the etd thesis submission database the specific Job Board resume template which corresponds to the specific resume being processed. At this point, the system's program “normalizes” the resume by my thesis ireland mapping it into the resume template such that for each section of resume content following a heading or subheading, one or more fieldnames are associated with the resume content. The final steps of the present invention involve the etd thesis submission program's extraction of the correct information from the normalized resume and having the program enter the information into the correct field locations within the information management database. The program accomplishes this task by transferring the information or content associated with a fieldname from the normalized resume to the same field within the information management database.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS. FIG. 1 is a diagrammatic illustration of the general system and method of the present invention. FIG. 2 is a flow chart of the normalization process for a formatted Job Board resume. FIG. 3 is a continued flow chart of the normalization process for a formatted Job Board resume. FIG. Ireland? 4 is a flow chart for an unformatted resume normalization process.

FIG. 5 is an illustration of the transfer of resume content to submission, a resume database. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION. FIG. 1 generally describes the computer based system and the case study method of the present invention. Initially, at step 1 , a resume is obtained which contains a plurality of headings and subheadings which introduce the etd thesis resume's content or information which relates to the heading. The resume may be either a formatted Job Board resume or an unformatted resume. At step 2 , the resume is inputted into a computer system, either by scanning in a paper copy of the a journey essay resume in order to create a digital copy or by simply obtaining a digital copy over an electronic network, such as the etd thesis Internet. The system's program also, at this step, retrieves an appropriate resume template.

The template contains keywords which correspond to precalculus, the resume's headings or subheadings, and at least one fieldname which corresponds to the content within a heading. In general terms, the system's program uses the etd thesis submission template in study method, order to map or associate the appropriate resume content to etd thesis submission, the appropriate fieldname. Assistant? The details of the mapping or association process, which are illustrated in FIGS. 2 , 3 and 4 , are referred to in the present invention as the etd thesis “normalization” of the resume, which is illustrated at step 3 . After normalization has been completed, step 4 illustrates a normalized resume which contains content (shown in the figure as content which is in italics) that has now been associated to homework, unique fieldnames. Finally, step 5 depicts the transfer of the content from the etd thesis submission normalized resume to an information management database where the content is stored in predetermined locations within the language paper database. Referring now to FIGS. 2 , 3 and 4 which illustrate the resume normalization process in detail. As shown in FIG. 2 , input to the system includes data from a parcel identifier database 10 , a linguistic database 15 and a fieldname list database 20 . The parcel identifier database 10 contains a list of unique character sequences or “parcel identifiers” which are used by the system to identify a specific type of Job Board resume which is to be normalized. The list of parcel identifiers is further separated into sublists of etd thesis parcel identifiers which are applicable to a specific language.

The linguistic database 15 contains a list of unique character sequences or “linguistic identifiers” which are similarly used by the system to identify the Job Board resume's language. Finally, the fieldname list database 20 contains a list of unique fieldnames that the program associates with resume content. At step 25 , the computer system loads the parcel identifiers, linguistic identifiers and homework the fieldname list into the computer's memory. At step 30 , the system's program displays to etd thesis, the operator the research paper list of fieldnames that were stored in etd thesis, memory at step 30 , and homework the operator, who is operating the computer display device, keyboard and mouse, uses the submission keyboard or mouse to select each resume fieldname from the list which corresponds to the content within a resume that the operator wants to precalculus, extract and transfer to an information management database. Submission? Additionally, the operator may identify the resume's language. At step 45 , the computer system's program determines whether the resume's language has been predetermined by the operator. If the language is cover for probation assistant, known, program control proceeds to step 60 . If the language is not determined, the system's program at step 50 searches the submission resume to determine whether it contains any character sequences that match one or more linguistic identifiers, and the program counts the number of matches which are located for each linguistic identifier. At step 55 , the resume's language is then determined by selecting the language which corresponds to the linguistic identifier which has the largest match count, and method program control proceeds to step 60 . Etd Thesis Submission? At step 60 , the computer's program searches the resume to determine if it contains a character sequence which matches a parcel identifier in the language previously identified. If at the case method step 65 a parcel identifier match is found, the system's program utilizes the parcel identifier, at step 70 , to identify the resume template, from the etd thesis template database 75 , which is associated with the resume, and bind stores the resume template in memory. For each specific Job Board resume format, the template database 75 contains a template which comprises a list of template keywords and template fieldnames. Etd Thesis? The template keywords correspond to a resume heading or subheading (e.g., “Name,” “Address,” “Education” and “Experience”) and are used to locate the beginning of specific resume content.

The template fieldnames correspond to the resume's content which follows and relates to a heading or subheading (e.g., “Susan B. Anthony” following the keyword “Name”; and “35 Tweed Terrace, Santa Cruz, Calif. 92301” following the keyword “Address”). The template fieldnames are used to normalize the resume by identifying the specific portions of the resume's content which is to be extracted and transferred to an information management database. For each Job Board resume, a corresponding Job Board template associates one or more template fieldnames to my thesis ireland, each keyword, and each fieldname, as described above, is associated with specific resume content. Etd Thesis? The template may be illustrated as follows: Now, turning to FIG. Ap English Language Research Paper? 3 , the system's program performs a repetitive process, illustrated in the figure as a loop between the start of the loop at 80 A and etd thesis the end of the loop at 80 B. The first time through the the case loop the etd thesis submission program searches the resume, at step 85 , for the first template keyword (i.e., “keyword 1(1) ”). Once the template keyword is found, then at step 95 the program locates the resume's content which follows and relates to the keyword and associates the content to one or more template fieldnames (i.e., fieldname 1(1) fieldname 1(2) . . . The Love Is The Root Evil Essay? fieldname 1(p) ). For example, if there is submission, one template fieldname (i.e., “fieldname 1(1) ”) associated with the for probation officer first keyword, then the etd thesis submission program associates all of the content with the fieldname. If the template contains two or more fieldnames, then the program applies certain rules in order to locate the the love of money is the evil appropriate content to submission, be associated with each fieldname. One rule is that if the content consists of only two words, then the first word is associated with the first template fieldname and the second word is associated with the ap english paper second template fieldname. Another rule is that if one or more commas separate character sequences from adjacent character sequences, each separate character sequence is consecutively associated with a consecutive template fieldname.

For example, fieldname 1(1) is associated with a first character sequence, fieldname (2) is associated with a second character sequence and fieldname 1(3) is associated with a third character sequence. Another rule is that if there are more template fieldnames than character sequences, then the first fieldnames are associated with consecutive character sequences, and the extra fieldnames are left empty. Finally, if there are more character sequences than there are template fieldnames, then the program deletes the shortest character sequence and etd thesis determines if the number of fieldnames then matches the number of the case character sequences. If the number of character sequences still exceeds the submission number of template fieldnames, the deletion process continues until a match is made. Once the first template keyword (i.e., “keyword 1 ”) and its associated template fieldnames and each fieldname's content has been identified, the data is stored at step 100 in a normalized resume table 105 as follows: Program control then passes to the end of the loop at method step 80 B where the program determines if any additional template keywords need to be searched.

If more keywords exist, the program returns to the start of the loop at 80 A and repeats the process described above until all keywords and each keyword's associated fieldnames and each fieldname's content has been identified and stored in the Normalized Resume Table 105 . At step 110 , the system's program selects each template fieldname that matches a fieldname that was identified by the operator at 30 in etd thesis, FIG. Precalculus? 1 , and the program automatically associates the template fieldname's content to etd thesis, the resume fieldname that was selected by is the essay the operator as described in FIG. Etd Thesis? 1 . Then at step 120 , the content associated with each resume fieldname is transferred to a database record which is stored in precalculus, memory at 125 . Submission? The database record is designed to for probation officer assistant, correctly interface with a resume database 135 . Next, at step 130 , the database record containing the appropriate content is output to the resume database 135 . Returning to FIG. 2 , if at step 65 the system's program is not able to locate a parcel identifier within the resume, control passes to the process illustrated in FIG. 4 . At step 150 , a default resume template is created from the Job Board resume templates which are stored in the template database. Etd Thesis Submission? The system's program identifies a group of letter assistant keywords from the Job Board resume templates that have the etd thesis same template fieldnames. For example, the keywords “Name” and “Name and Address” would constitute a single keyword group because each keyword within the group has the same template fieldname; similarly, the keywords “Education” and “College Education” would comprise another group.

In this manner, the default resume template's keyword contains a group of bind ireland several possible keywords. The system's program next performs a repetitive process or loop commencing at step 155 A and ending at step 155 B. At step 160 , the program searches the resume for a character sequence that matches one of the keywords within the first group of keywords. If at step 165 a match is found, the program proceeds to step 170 where it associates the resume's content, which follows and relates to the group of keywords, with one or more fieldnames. The process and rules which are applied are identical to that described above in connection with FIG. 3 , except that at etd thesis submission step 165 the program determines if a keyword is located. If a keyword is found, the process continues to steps 170 , 175 and to the end of the bind ireland loop. If a keyword is not found, control passes immediately to the end of the loop.

Similarly, at step 175 , the content which has been identified and associated with each fieldname is stored in the normalized resume table 105 . Once all keyword groups have been utilized to locate matching character sequences, program control passes to step 180 A- 180 B where the program attempts to identify content that has not been associated with a fieldname. This process is carried out by submission determining if: 1) the content contains a sequence of characters or a “field locator” which matches a predetermined character sequence; or 2) the bind ireland content is etd thesis, located at the top of the resume. The predetermined character sequence may be any sequence of characters that are normally found within a resume. For example, the words “Street,” “Avenue,” “Boulevard,” “Terrace” or “Lane” and the abbreviations “St.,” “Ave.,” “BI.,” “Terr.,” and “Ln.” are normally set forth in the address portion of a resume. Similarly, five (5) sequential numbers normally would be a zip code. Accordingly, at step 190 , the program searches for a field locator. If at step 195 the the case method field locator is found, then at step 200 , the program associates a default template fieldname to all of the content which appears before the sequence and immediately after the applicant's name in accordance with certain rules.

For example, the applicant's name is recognized by locating on submission, one line two words, two words separated by a single letter, three words, or the precalculus homework characters “Mr.,” “Mrs.,” “Ms.,” or the etd thesis submission like. And, the program stores all of the bind content after the sequence until a line break. And, second, if the content appears at the top of the resume page, the program associates a default fieldname with the applicant's name. If at 195 no field locator is found, control passes to the end of the loop. At step 205 , the content and etd thesis its associated default template fieldname is stored in the normalized resume table, and control returns to the top of the loop. The process continues until, at step 195 , no field locator is found and study method control is returned to the end of the etd thesis loop at 180 B. At this point, the precalculus homework program executes steps 110 through 130 set forth in etd thesis, FIG. Cover For Probation? 3 , where the resume fieldnames that were selected by etd thesis submission the operator are matched with the default template fieldname and the resume content is output to ap english paper, the resume database 135 . FIG. 5 presents an example of the present invention from the vantage point of an operator who is using the invention's computer program in order to process resumes received by an employer. Once the submission resume has been stored in the memory of the employer's computer system, the homework operator initiates the normalization process by submission inputting a predetermined command which instructs the computer to execute the normalization process.

The resume on the left side of the homework figure is the resume after it has been normalized, with the normalization illustrated by showing the textual content in italics. Etd Thesis Submission? The right side of the figure shows that the content has been automatically transferred to the resume database. While the present invention has been described with reference to a few embodiments, the description is the love evil essay, illustrative of the invention and is not to be construed as limiting the invention. Various modifications may occur to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.

Power Management S3 Tricks and Tips. This document is intended to explain how S3 (suspend/resume) works and has some tricks and tips to help debug and diagnose S3 issues. S3 is the ACPI sleep state that is known as sleep or suspend to RAM. It essentially turns off most power of the system but keeps memory powered. When the user hits the sleep key, this generates a hardware interrupt which is caught and handled by the embedded controller (EC).

ACPI defines two approaches to handle power buttons - fixed hardware or generic hardware. In the fixed hardware scheme, EC triggers a low-pulse to the PWRBTN# pin and Southbridge (SB) sets PWRBTN_STS bit in PM1_STS register to indicate to the operating system that a power button event occurs. Submission! In the generic hardware scheme, EC triggers a change to bind my thesis ireland, a GPIO pin to generate a general-purpose event to BIOS, and BIOS issues a Notify(PWRB, 0x80) to the operating system. You can observe which GPE is etd thesis triggered by examining the files in /sys/firmware/acpi/interrupts and see which one increments when the event occurs. The kernel handles the GPE and based on which GPE gets triggered it then executes the appropriate handler in the ACPI DSDT table (the DSDT, Differentiated System Description Table, contains AML bytecode that is executed in the kernel context by the kernel's ACPI driver. For example, if GPE 0x1e is triggered then AML bytecode method _GPE._L1E() or _GPE._E1E() is executed depending on it being Level or Edge triggered (the method name has a L or E prefix corresponds to Level or Edge triggered events). Typically the method just creates a Notify() event which gets passed over to user space via the /proc/acpi/event interface and my thesis, handled by acpid and ultimately this calls /etc/acpi/sleep.sh which in turn calls pm-suspend. Note: Level-triggered or edge-triggered depends on the design and the configuration of the SB, and etd thesis, firmware (BIOS) must implement it correctly. The pm-suspend script prepares the machine for suspend, typically this involves unloading broken modules that don't suspend well and then finally writing the text mem to /sys/power/state. Writing to /sys/power/state initiates the kernel side of the suspend. First it suspends all user space tasks (freezing them).

Next the kernel traverses the device tree and for each driver it calls the registered suspend method. It is the responsibility of each driver to ensure the essay, correct state is saved to allow the etd thesis submission, hardware to resume correctly and this is where a lot of bugs can occur. The kernel then executes the ACPI methods _PTS() (Prepare to sleep) and/or _GTS() (Going to Sleep) which are again in then DSDT. This byte code generally does platform specific magic, such as writing magic values to the embedded controller and even calling System Management Mode (SMM) code in the BIOS via the use of System Management Interrupts (SMI). The kernel has no knowledge of precalculus homework what is happening while these methods are executing - the byte code controlling the etd thesis, BIOS and Embedded Controller interactions are out of the kernel's control. Is The Of All! Obviously if the AML byte code or BIOS code being executed in SMI is buggy it can cause S3 issues and there is little can be done to etd thesis submission, easily fix this in research paper, the kernel.

When the methods return control back to submission, the kernel the system is almost ready to suspend. The kernel writes the address of the resume wakeup code into a data structure and the address is written into the Firmware Waking Vector (as specified by the Fixed ACPI Description Table (FADT)). Bind! The kernel fetches the addresses of the PM1a/PM1b control registers from the FADT and writes the sleep type (SLP_TYP) and sleep enable (SLP_EN) bits to the registers and this triggers the submission, sleep. The kernel will sit in a wait loop until it gets put to sleep by the pending action of writing to the PM control registers. After kernel writes SLP_TYP and SLP_EN, it is common a SMI is generated by letter officer SB (called Sleep SMI as it is etd thesis invoked after the kernel considers that the system is in S3). Note that it is up to the BIOS to save specific BIOS and Embedded Controller state. The Love Of Money Is The Root! This is etd thesis submission normally done in the _PTS/_GTS Method calls and in Sleep SMI. Sometimes this is were weird BIOS or EC state issues cause suspend/resume to fail.

A break down of the calls in the kernel is as follows: Eventually the user wants to wake their machine up from S3 suspend. The user presses a power button which wakes up the CPU and it jumps to research, a known BIOS start address. The BIOS does some setup to get the memory controller, restore some device states, and then reads the ACPI status register to etd thesis submission, tell it if it was in a suspended state. The BIOS then jumps to the wakeup address saved in cover officer, the Firmware Waking Vector. The kernel resume code pointed to by the Firmware Waking Vector is etd thesis some real mode x86 code that sets the letter for probation assistant, CPU back into normal kernel protected mode and then restores CPU register state and pops back down the call suspend call chain to do the resume.

At this point the kernel calls the ACPI _WAK() method, it then resumes drivers, unfreezes threads and user space processes and submission, we return back to point where mem was just written to /sys/power/state. To user space, nothing has really changed, apart from a jump forward in time by homework the clock. The first bit of magic to be aware of is in arch/x86/kernel/acpi/realmode/wakeup.S. this directly maps to the wakeup_header defined in arch/x86/kernel/acpi/realmode/wakeup.h: during suspend, header-pmode_entry is set to wakeup_pmode_return() in function acpi_save_state_mem() and kernel state is etd thesis saved into a wakeup header which is a real mode copy (to acpi_realmode) of precalculus a chunk of code and data in wakeup_code_start..wakeup_code_end. Etd Thesis! acpi_wakeup_address points to the real mode code + data and acpi_sleep_prepare() uses this to set the waking vector before suspending. To understand resume, we need to of money is the root of all, examine the final phase of suspend. Assembler function do_suspend_lowlevel in arch/x86/kernel/acpi/wakeup_32.S performs the final phase of suspend, it basically does the following: saves cpu state + registers calls acpi_enter_sleep_state() which ultimately ends end suspending and CPU halts. Etd Thesis! If this fails, the registers + cpu state are restored and my thesis, we return from do_suspend_lowlevel(). The wakeup from S3 works as follows: BIOS (realmode) inspects the ACPI waking vector and jumps out of BIOS real mode into wakeup_code() in arch/x86/kernel/acpi/realmode/wakeup.S. Recall that this code is etd thesis submission a copy in real mode memory - this code then ljmpl's to letter for probation assistant, wakeup_pmode_return(). wakeup_pmode_return() in arch/x86/kernel/acpi/wakeup_32.S restores registers, the etd thesis, gdt, idt and precalculus homework, ltd (hence comes out of submission real mode), and bind my thesis, restores the stack pointer does a final sanity check to see if a saved magic value is etd thesis as expected and if all is OK resturns back to pop the stack and return from do_suspend_lowlevel() as if nothing has happened.

As you can now see, suspending and resuming is a journey by car rather non-trivial. The following sections explain how where to look for S3 bugs: We rely on drivers behaving correctly in their suspend/resume methods, if state is submission not saved/restored correctly then broken drivers can break in subtle and mysterious ways. Drivers may oops during suspend or resume, which causes headache for letter assistant, debugging since these normally happen while the console is suspended. The first thing to try is to boot the kernel with kernel parameter: no_console_suspend. Next switch to VT1 and suspend/resume using Ctrl-Alt-F1 or: login on VT1 and suspend using: Repeat several times to see if you can capture a kernel oops. Use a digial camera to photo graph the oops message or if it scrolls too quickly off the screen limit the kernel oops message by hacking dump_stack() (arch/x86/kernel/dumpstack.c) to etd thesis, dump out study method, less off a stack trace.

If you know the bug exists in a driver but you cannot get an oops and you have no console then things get tricky. The PC does can only save state in etd thesis, the real time clock (RTC) over reboots, so we have to result to saving a hashed state of the ireland, device suspend details in the RTC. We use the /sys/power/pm_trace interface to enable PM debugging as follows: If resume fails, quickly reboot the etd thesis submission, machine as you have. 3 minutes before the updates to cover letter, the RTC corrupt the saved hashed state. Once rebooted, look for the Magic numbers: text in submission, the kernel log, use dmesg, and look for bind, something like: You may even get lucky and get a device being mentioned as the problematic driver, e.g.: Device numbers sometimes are show, use lspci to track down the submission, problematic device. The next trick is to remove the module and repeat the suspend/resume to see if this was the problem driver or not. If a driver is not suspending/resuming correctly one workaround is to then add the study, name of the modules to the MODULES= list in /etc/default/acpi-support.

However, the best approach is to find out etd thesis submission, why the driver is breaking suspend/resume and fixing it. However, /sys/power/pm_trace is known to be a little temperamental and may yield false positives. Bind! An alternative approach is to remove all modules and do a suspend/resume cycle. If this works, then start loading modules one by one until you find one that causes the hang. As you may now be aware, we are very reliant on the BIOS + ACPI for suspend/resume and more often than not these cause the bugs. The issues fall into several categories:

In this scenario, the submission, kernel passes control over to BIOS, and we BIOS never returns control back to the kernel. This can occur when the ACPI _PTS() or _GTS() methods call into the BIOS via SMIs - these are rare, but possible. In this case, one needs to enable ACPI AML code execution tracing and see if these methods are being executed at bind my thesis the time of the hang. One may also want to check whether the system hangs after kernel writes SLP_TYP and submission, SLP_EN. If so, BIOS may hang in Sleep SMI. More likely though BIOS either never jumps back to the Firmware Waking Vector or it jumps to the wrong location, or has really screwed up the the love is the root essay, processor state and returns to etd thesis, the kernel via the Firmware Waking Vector but does not execute in the kernel correctly. At this point one should sanity check to see if the BIOS actually made it back into the kernel. One of ap english a handful tricks can be used: 1. Write some code in wakeup_pmode_return() (arch/x86/kernel/acpi/wakeup_32.S) to etd thesis, flash the LEDs on to indicate the BIOS jumped back to the kernel.

Example code below: unfortunately a lot of the newer machines don't seem to even have the luxury of a keyboard LED, so you may need to try the following strategies: 2. Write some code in by car essay, wakeup_pmode_return() (arch/x86/kernel/acpi/wakeup_32.S) to dump state in port $80 and etd thesis, use a port $80 debug card. You need to boot with io_delay=udelay or io_delay=0xed so not to clobber port $80 on port I/O delay operations. 3. Write some code in wakeup_pmode_return() (arch/x86/kernel/acpi/wakeup_32.S) to zap the CMOS settings on resume. Of Money Of All! When the machine hangs, reboot. Your BIOS may beep and complain about the CMOS being cleared, and/or you may need to go into the BIOS set up to re-set the BIOS config back to etd thesis, a sane state.

If this happens you at least know that the BIOS transitioned from a S3 wakeup and jumped back into the kernel. We are very reliant on ACPI to do things right, sometimes it just does not. Method! A few things worth checking are: Method _PTS(). This ACPI Method needs to exist and etd thesis submission, is required to transition the a journey, machine to the suspend state correctly. Unfortunately we rely in the ACPI AML code and the underlying BIOS code (if used) to do the right thing. Method _GTS(). This ACPI Method is not required, but needs to etd thesis, work correctly if it does exist. Like _PTS() it is method platform specific and may interact with the BIOS/Emebedded Controller in etd thesis submission, a closed and proprietary way. PM1a/b register settings from FADT.

These are tweaked to set the PM power type and suspend enable at S3 suspend time, so if the addresses are incorrect the letter for probation officer, kernel may be just twiddling the wrong registers. These can be dumped out using one of the following: and the edit FACP.dsl and check that the PM1A/PM1B event and control blocks look sane. Submission! You need to consult the chipset specific data sheet to sanity check these register addresses. Pressing the precalculus, suspend hot key should in theory trigger a suspend. The easiest thing to check is that the ACPI events are being passed down to etd thesis, acpid to kick off the suspend. Use the following to spy on ACPI events: If this fails, then next thing to check is for any GPEs occurring. If you don't observe any GPEs then there could be a problem with the my thesis ireland, key waking up the Embedded Controller and the Embedded Controller poking the Southbridge which in turn causes the submission, GPE. To observe the a journey, GPEs, use:

then press the button and see if any of the GPE event counters increment. If not, you have a button + Embedded Controller issue. Finally, if acpi_events to occur then make sure pm_suspend is being run. This is a shell script, so you can add in debug and write it to submission, a log file to observe if it's being called. If it's not, then there is a problem with acpid calling the sleep script which calls pm-suspend. If pm-suspend is being called, then the final issue is most probably the by car, kernel attempting to suspend by fails because of etd thesis submission broken ACPI Methods such as _PTS().

These need to be debugged by enabling the ACPI driver debug and observing the AML byte code being executed for essay, these methods. The following power management kernel messages are a little terse and it's instructive to know what they really mean: Usually means dpm_suspend_noirq failed because some devices did not power down. dpm_prepare() failed to prepare all non-sys devices for a system PM transition. The device should be listed in the error message. sysdev_suspend failed because some system devices did not power down. It has been known for machines to sit in resume for 300+ seconds before finally completing resume.

Normally this means that during resume the kernel is reconfiguring some hardware, for example, the PCI configuration spaces and needs to do a short delay. Sometimes the etd thesis submission, CPU can pop into a very low C state and the HPET cannot wake it up - the of money is the evil, timer interrupt gets lost. For example, the AMD C1E idle wait can sometimes produce long delays on resume. This is a known issue with the failed delivery of interrupts while in deep C states. If you have a BIOS option to disable C1E then first disable this and retry. Alternatively, re-test with the kernel parameter idle=mwait - this will disable the more power optimal C1E idle, so it's not energy star friendly. If this is successfully then you should look at more optimal workarounds such as disabling the local APIC or disabling the APIC completely, so boot with nolapic or nolapic_timer kernel parameters. Finally, it may be worth exploring the kernel HPET parameters to see if this helps stop or work around the etd thesis submission, delay.

Criminology/Rodney King term paper 16499. THE RODNEY KING INCIDENT According to etd thesis, Whitman (1993): Well before he heard the first siren, Rodney King knew he never should have slipped that key into the ignition. They had been having so much fun, he and his buddies Bryant Allen and Freddie Helms, just kicking back, sipping some inexpensive 40-ounce bottles of malt liquor at the local park as they jawed and bind ireland laughed while the daylight ebbed away. Submission! Afterward, they had stood in front of Allen's mom's house trying to croon a few tunes. King wasn't much of a singer but, when he switched to rapping, his buddies felt he was almost in a groove. Precalculus Homework! And then it was after midnight, and suddenly King was driving his car, flying down the highway at 80 miles per etd thesis submission, hour, the the case method, radio blaring, he and Allen singing again, and submission then there it was--the flashing light atop the highway patrol car bouncing off his rearview mirror, filling his car with a red light that King had learned to dread.

King knew, as he later testified, that he was drunk and that if the police caught him speeding he'd soon be back in prison for violating parole (Whitman, 1993, pp. 34-57). It is recommended that the student writing on this topic consider the mindset of Rodney King and why he fought being detained by the officers. In the letter for probation assistant, middle of the etd thesis submission, night of March 3, 1991, George William Holiday taped the encounter between Rodney King and several officers. This was, according to some, one of the most famous images in modern American history.

The tape, however, was edited before it was broadcast. Language Research Paper! Wilson said, Gone were the few seconds in which King, at the start of the episode, charged at the officers. What views saw was only officers beating a crouching King with metal batons. Submission! And the absence of pictures of of money root of all evil, King's charge led many people to believe that King was simply and gratuitously the victim of police torture. In fact, as the records show, he was very drunk, had led officers on a wild chase through the streets, had refused to submit to orders to lie down, had resisted two electric charges from a Taser, and had thrown off officers who tried to subdue him (Wilson, 1998, pp. 34). Over 50 blows were directed at etd thesis submission Rodney King, a black man (pp. 34). The Case Method! Of those, 31 blows struck him (pp. 34).

It is recommended that the student writing on this topic pay particular attention to the way the media's involvement worsened an already bad situation. According to Wilson (1998), the Rodney King riot in etd thesis submission, 1992 had as its immediate cause public beliefs concerning police behavior (Wilson, 1998, pp. A Journey! 34). He stated, After the acquittal of etd thesis, officers accused of beating Rodney King, there erupted the a journey by car essay, nation's most deadly urban riot in etd thesis submission, over a century. Bind My Thesis! Fifty-four people were killed, over eight hundred buildings were destroyed, and etd thesis submission thousands more were damaged or looted (pp. 34). He posits that profound differences of opinion remain concerning whether the King beating justified such a tumultuous response (pp. The Love Is The Of All Evil! 34). Submission! The student should consider the different types of responses to the Rodney King incident and the reason for them. Homework! Los Angeles is a city founded by white, middle-class progressives that wanted clean, efficient government, which was not contaminated by party politics.

They put a charter in place that made elections nonpartisan. They also restricted how much political patronage can be handed out. Authority was conferred over a variety of government institutions to include the etd thesis, police and bind part-time citizen commissions. Consequently, because of the commissions and the great powers of the etd thesis, city council, the mayor of Los Angeles is weak (Wilson, 1998, pp. 34). Proposition 13 was passed in 1978 (Wilson, 1998, pp. 34).

Wilson (1998) stated, By cutting property taxes, restricting the rate at which they could be increased, and requiring a two-thirds majority before voters could approve in subsequent elections any new expenditure, Proposition 13 sharply reduced the chance that the LAPD could get much money. Bind My Thesis! As a result, the police suffered from too few officers, police cars that were driven until their axles fell off, a communications system that was hopelessly inadequate, a crime lab that began to deteriorate, and station houses that were ramshackle or worse. In 1960, the city had reported to it three violent crimes for every LAPD officer. By 1990, there were ten such crimes for every officer. The 'thin blue line' of the LAPD was now a heavily overworked, poorly equipped line. When the Rodney King riots broke out, the officers in the nearest station did not have a television set with which to etd thesis submission, watch what virtually every other Angeleno was seeing. To make matters worse, Chief Daryl Gates and Mayor Tom Bradley were not on of money is the of all, speaking terms. In a different city, the mayor would have fired a chief whom he did not like.

In Los Angeles, again, that was not possible (Wilson, 1998, pp. 34). The student should consider how history has made Los Angeles the city it is. Texeira (1995) stated, The police, acting as an agent of state control, has nurtured and perpetuated racial oppression through its repressive containment of internally colonized African American communities. African Americans are forced to live in submission, a type of internal US colony by ireland, societal oppression and attitudes that have changed little since the early days of the slave codes. Experiences involving the LAPD and Sheriff's Dept substantiate this view. Ex-detective Mark Fuhrman and etd thesis the brutal attack on Rodney King epitomize the institutional racism and colonial thinking in modern policing (Texeira, 1995, pp. 235).

Edgerton posits that the televised beating of Rodney King, the battering of Reginald Denny and the incendiary rioting that followed are unforgettable images, which are nearly as vivid as the assassination of John F. Kennedy. During the riot, fires spread from South Central Los Angeles to Koreatown, Hollywood, and the fringes of the affluent and mostly white Westside. He stated, The country's second-largest city was engulfed in fear and rage, and the police were nowhere to by car, be seen (Edgerton, 1998, pp. 52). The student should consider the use of etd thesis, media in precalculus homework, the Rodney King incident.

Edgerton (1998) suggested that Cannon helps the reader to understand the tensions that erupted after the beating of Rodney King. Etd Thesis Submission! Most of the American public do not know that King charged at method Officer Powell, because the TV stations that showed the videotape deleted the first 13 seconds of the submission, tape when the charge took place (Edgerton, 1998, pp. 52). Edgerton stated, Four LAPD officers were charged in precalculus homework, the King beating, but, in a decision that defies explanation, instead of their being tried by a racially mixed jury in downtown Los Angeles, a change of venue was granted : to virtually all-white, and famously pro-police, Simi Valley. Their acquittal was now a foregone conclusion, and submission yet neither the precalculus homework, city nor the LAPD took any steps to prepare for a riot. The not-guilty verdicts were announced at submission 3:15 P. Homework! M. on April 29, 1992. An hour later, there began the worst riot in U. Submission! S. history since the end of the Civil War. Precalculus! Before it ended, five terrible days later, 54 people had been killed and 2,300 injured, and 862 building had been burned.

In all, the etd thesis, damage was estimated at study method $900 million. Etd Thesis! As the mobs randomly attacked white, Latino, and Asian motorists, the few police in the area were ordered to retreat to of all evil essay, a staging area, leaving the rioters free to burn, pillage, and kill (Edgerton, 1998, pp. Etd Thesis! 52). The student should consider how violence breeds violence hatred and is the root of all evil rage. According to Johnson (1995), policing in America is etd thesis dangerous and cover for probation assistant difficult work. He suggests that is it is often a convenient scapegoat for social ills. Police brutality is etd thesis frequently cited by community and national leaders as a major contributing factor in the love of money is the root of all essay, civil unrest.

Johnson (1995) posits that the Rodney King incident clearly demonstrates the etd thesis, potentially explosive connection between race and police action. The aftermath of such incidents generally assumes a similar pattern. Cover Letter For Probation Officer! Special commissions prepare reports attempting to isolate options that communities and police departments might take to improve police-community relations (Johnson, 1995, pp. 26). The student should consider how police departments nationally should deal with such impropriety as police brutality. After the Rodney King incident, a nationwide initiative was undertaken by the National Association for the Advancement of etd thesis, Colored People (NAACP). The NAACP held hearing in six cities, which brought together Community leaders and police officials in frank and open discussions of the bind my thesis, issues surrounding race and policing. The cities in which the meetings were held were Norfolk, Miami, Los Angeles, Houston, St. Louis, and Indianapolis (Johnson, 1995, pp. 26).

It was conceded by submission, the author that society has come to homework, increasingly, and mistakenly, look to the police to solve the complex problems of our times. These problems cannot be solved by policing alone (Johnson, 1995, pp. 26). Beyond the Rodney King Story defines 10 common, but often-unspoken, police cultural beliefs that impede progress in etd thesis, relations between the police and the community. Language Paper! There are many suggestions for improving relations between minority groups and the police. More police departments should be encouraged to adopt community-policing strategies. Police departments should create new means of evaluating the performance of officers. They should also explore new options in recruiting minority personnel, while raising their educational standards (Johnson, 1995, pp. 26). The student should consider cultural beliefs and etd thesis the role they play in policing. Johnson stated, The authors [of 'Beyond the Rodney King Story'] provide functional answers to difficult questions relating to racism, police brutality, and the general lack of trust between some minority groups and police departments. 'Beyond the Rodney King Story' is bind ireland a highly relevant and submission wide-ranging presentation that should be read carefully by both police and community leaders (Johnson, 1995, pp.

26). Witkin and his colleagues (1992) stated, For America's police officers, the status quo simply won't do anymore. Haunted by the brutal video images of of money is the, Rodney King and the flickering flames of south-central Los Angeles, by frightening violent-crime rates and intractable drug crisis, cops are under tremendous pressure to accelerate reforms that have been gathering steam since the mid-'80s. Over time, the reform drive could revolutionize police work and substantially improve the often strained relations between cops and the communities they serve (Witkin, et al, 1992, pp. 27-35). Kansas City Police Chief Steven Bishop stated, The predicate for change in the 1990s is the Rodney King incident. People want a more active role in saying how they want to be policed (Witkin, et al, 1992, pp. 27-35).

The student should consider the sociology of today's citizen. According to Witkin and etd thesis his colleagues (1992), researchers argue persuasively that fighting fear is as important to stabilizing communities as is fighting serious crimes. They posit that the real impetus for change comes from a new generation of homework, better-educated police leader that are willing to challenge the conventional wisdom (Witkin, et al, 1992, pp. 27-35). frustrations have led progressive police executives to a broader set of conclusions: that crime has many complex causes and that police departments cannot keep the streets safe by themselves. If crime is to submission, be controlled, police must reach out to other local institutions, and indeed to is the essay, the broader community at large, and submission create partnerships. Paper! That thinking is responsible for the most radical and controversial innovations sweeping the field these days--so-called community-oriented policing. Submission! The basics are these: Police must form community alliances to focus on prevention, addressing the causes and circumstances leading to crime, rather than careening from homework incident to incident (Witkin, et al, 1992, pp. 27-35). Etd Thesis Submission! Despite the pressures to change, potent obstacles remain. A rigid, traditional police culture continues to the love of money of all, dominate some departments, and police unions sometimes resist new ideas as well.

Innovation may offend special interest, such as wealthy neighborhoods opposed to diversion of manpower to higher-crime areas. Budgets are tight, and new ideas like the creation of units devoted to handling repeat offenders cost money (Witkin, et al, 1992, pp. Etd Thesis! 27-35). Kansas City police officer Walt Mulloy said, Police work has been forever changed into two phases--before Rodney King and after Rodney King (Witkin, et al, 1992, pp. 27-35). According to Dinse and Sheehan (1998): Police Commissioner Jesse A. Brewer requested the help of the US Military Academy at West Point, NY, for by car the development of a leadership training for the officers of the Los Angeles Dept in 1992.

This was in response to the recommendation of the commission which investigated the etd thesis, Rodney King incident and Los Angeles riots. The West Point Leadership and Command Program was created which allowed the officers to develop competence and character (Dinse; Sheehan, 1998, pp. 18). Federal district judge, Judge John G. Davies received much criticism for former police officer Stacey Koon's light sentencing in cover letter for probation officer assistant, the Rodney King beating case, because his 30-month sentence was lower than the federal guidelines. Etd Thesis Submission! According to Cox (1996): The US Court of Appeals for for probation officer assistant the 9th Circuit wanted him to impose much more prison time, but the US Supreme Court sided with Davies and with judicial discretion (Cox, 1996, pp. A10). The student should consider the following as a proposal or an alternative to how a positive outcome for the victim could have been achieved through a new policy implemented in the police department for communications. Etd Thesis Submission! The officers involved in the Rodney King incident should have had better training and more police-community relations. Research! Yes, King was intoxicated and they were having trouble catching him and subduing him, but their acts of etd thesis, brutal force were totally unnecessary. The officers should have immediately been fired from the job, no ifs, ands or buts. Strict discipline should always be enforced immediately, and the officers involved should be made aware from the onset of precalculus homework, their professions as police officers that this type of submission, behavior is unacceptable and will never be tolerated.

The days of street justice administered by cops and the love slaps on the wrist for offending officers is totally inappropriate in the 1990s and beyond. Police training should concentrate equally, if not more, on how to talk to etd thesis, civilians that how to use the baton as a weapon. A Journey By Car Essay! The student should consider the following as a proposal or an alternative to how a positive outcome for the victim could have been achieved through a new policy implemented in the police departments. The departments should flag those potential bad cops and create an intensive training course to enhance the officer's communications skills. Communication is submission not just about words but about tone, pitch, distance, and body language as well. There are many barriers to communication such as leather gloves or mirrored sunglasses, which can seem as intimidating to the public. All police officers need to learn such techniques as supportive listening, eye contact and frequent nodding. By listening to what the citizen says, the officer opens more avenues for handling the situation.

Officers should begin traffic stops by first introducing themselves. They should then immediately tell the motorist why he or she was stopped. The student should consider the following as a proposal or an officer assistant alternative to submission, how a positive outcome for the victim could have been achieved through a new policy implemented in the courts, which would not allow a change in venue if the outcome would be biased by study, the change. After all, a racially mixed jury is more appropriate than one that is mostly of one race. The trial of the officers involved should not been given a change of venue to a white community. This stacked the cards in etd thesis submission, the favor of those officers getting a lessor sentence or getting off completely. Racism is something that should never be tolerated, and making it easy for the love of money of all officers to get off easily is submission not an option. The sentencing is also a factor the student should consider, since those punished got off with less than the federal guidelines. BIBLIOGRAPHY Cox, Gail Diane.
