Best Practices for Designing and Grading Exams. The most obvious function of assessment methods (such as exams, quizzes, papers, and presentations) is to enable instructors to make judgments about the quality of student learning (i.e., assign grades). However, the method of assessment also can have a direct impact on the quality of ms thesis student learning. Review Business! Students assume that the focus of exams and assignments reflects the educational goals most valued by an instructor, and they direct their learning and studying accordingly (McKeachie Svinicki, 2006). General grading systems can have an impact as well. For example, a strict bell curve (i.e., norm-reference grading) has the potential to dampen motivation and cooperation in a classroom, while a system that strictly rewards proficiency (i.e., criterion-referenced grading ) could be perceived as contributing to grade inflation. Given the presentation importance of assessment for both faculty and student interactions about learning, how can instructors develop exams that provide useful and relevant data about their students#39; learning and also direct students to spend their time on the important aspects of essay a course or course unit? How do grading practices further influence this process? Ideally, effective exams have four characteristics. Presentation! They are:

Valid, (providing useful information about the concepts they were designed to culture, test), Reliable (allowing consistent measurement and discriminating between different levels of performance), Recognizable (instruction has prepared students for the assessment), and ms thesis presentation Realistic (concerning time and effort required to complete the assignment) (Svinicki, 1999). Most importantly, exams and assignments should f ocus on the most important content and behaviors emphasized during the course (or particular section of the course). What are the primary ideas, issues, and event essays skills you hope students learn during a particular course/unit/module? These are the learning outcomes you wish to measure. For example, if your learning outcome involves memorization, then you should assess for memorization or classification; if you hope students will develop problem-solving capacities, your exams should focus on assessing students’ application and analysis skills. As a general rule, assessments that focus too heavily on details (e.g., isolated facts, figures, etc.) “will probably lead to better student retention of the footnotes at presentation, the cost of the main points (Halpern Hakel, 2003, p. 40). As noted in Table 1, each type of exam item may be better suited to measuring some learning outcomes than others, and each has its advantages and disadvantages in dog photo terms of presentation ease of design, implementation, and event essays scoring. Table 1: Advantages and Disadvantages of Commonly Used Types of ms thesis presentation Achievement Test Items. Many items can be administered in event essays a relatively short time. Moderately easy to write; easily scored.

Limited primarily to testing knowledge of information. Easy to guess correctly on presentation many items, even if material has not been mastered. Personal Narrative Essay Bullying! Can be used to assess broad range of content in a brief period. Skillfully written items can measure higher order cognitive skills. Can be scored quickly.

Difficult and time consuming to write good items. Possible to assess higher order cognitive skills, but most items assess only knowledge. Some correct answers can be guesses. Items can be written quickly. A broad range of ms thesis content can be assessed. Scoring can be done efficiently. Higher order cognitive skills are difficult to assess. Event Essays! Short Answer or Completion. Many can be administered in a brief amount of time. Presentation! Relatively efficient to score.

Moderately easy to write. Difficult to review business, identify defensible criteria for correct answers. Limited to questions that can be answered or completed in very few words. Can be used to measure higher order cognitive skills. Relatively easy to write questions. Difficult for respondent to get correct answer by ms thesis presentation, guessing. Time consuming to administer and score. Difficult to dog photo, identify reliable criteria for scoring. Only a limited range of ms thesis presentation content can be sampled during any one testing period.

Adapted from Table 10.1 of Worthen, et al., 1993, p. 261. General Guidelines for Developing Multiple-Choice and Essay Questions. The following sections highlight general guidelines for developing multiple-choice and essay questions, which are often used in event essays college-level assessment because they readily lend themselves to measuring higher order thinking skills (e.g., application, justification, inference, analysis and evaluation). Yet instructors often struggle to create, implement, and score these types of questions (McMillan, 2001; Worthen, et al., 1993). Multiple-choice questions have a number of presentation advantages. First, they can measure various kinds of knowledge, including students#39; understanding of terminology, facts, principles, methods, and procedures, as well as their ability to apply, interpret, and justify. When carefully designed, multiple-choice items also can assess higher-order thinking skills. Multiple-choice questions are less ambiguous than short-answer items, thereby providing a more focused assessment of event essays student knowledge. Multiple-choice items are superior to true-false items in several ways: on true-false items, students can receive credit for knowing that a statement is incorrect, without knowing what is correct.

Multiple-choice items offer greater reliability than true-false items as the opportunity for guessing is reduced with the larger number of options. Finally, an instructor can diagnose misunderstanding by analyzing the incorrect options chosen by presentation, students. A disadvantage of multiple-choice items is that they require developing incorrect, yet plausible, options that can be difficult to create. In addition, multiple- choice questions do not allow instructors to measure students’ ability to organize and culture present ideas. Finally, because it is much easier to create multiple-choice items that test recall and recognition rather than higher order thinking, multiple-choice exams run the risk of ms thesis presentation not assessing the deep learning that many instructors consider important (Greenland Linn, 1990; McMillan, 2001). Guidelines for writing multiple-choice items include advice about stems, correct answers, and distractors (McMillan, 2001, p. 150; Piontek, 2008): S tems pose the problem or question. Is the stem stated as clearly, directly, and simply as possible? Is the narrative about bullying problem described fully in ms thesis presentation the stem? Is the stem stated positively, to avoid the possibility that students will overlook terms like “no,” “not,” or “least”?

Does the review business stem provide only information relevant to ms thesis, the problem? Possible responses include the correct answer and distractors , or the incorrect choices. Multiple-choice questions usually have at least three distractors. Are the and write essay summary distractors plausible to students who do not know the correct answer? Is there only one correct answer? Are all the ms thesis presentation possible answers parallel with respect to grammatical structure, length, and complexity? Are the options short? Are complex options avoided? Are options placed in logical order? Are correct answers spread equally among all the on task choices? (For example, is answer “A” correct about the same number of times as options “B” or “C” or “D”)? An example of good multiple-choice questions that assess higher-order thinking skills is the following test question from pharmacy (Park, 2008): Patient WC was admitted for third-degree burns over 75% of his body.

The attending physician asks you to start this patient on antibiotic therapy. Which one of the ms thesis presentation following is the best reason why WC would need antibiotic prophylaxis? A second question builds on the first by review business, describing the ms thesis patient’s labs two days later, asking the on task students to ms thesis presentation, develop an explanation for the subsequent lab results. (See Piontek, 2008 for culture, the full question.) Essay questions can tap complex thinking by requiring students to organize and integrate information, interpret information, construct arguments, give explanations, evaluate the merit of ideas, and carry out other types of reasoning (Cashin, 1987; Gronlund Linn, 1990; McMillan, 2001; Thorndike, 1997; Worthen, et al., 1993). Restricted response essay questions are good for assessing basic knowledge and understanding and generally require a brief written response (e.g., “State two hypotheses about why birds migrate. Summarize the evidence supporting each hypothesis” [Worthen, et al., 1993, p. 277].) Extended response essay items allow students to construct a variety of strategies, processes, interpretations and explanations for a question, such as the ms thesis presentation following: The framers of the essay on task Constitution strove to create an effective national government that balanced the tension between majority rule and the rights of minorities.

What aspects of American politics favor majority rule? What aspects protect the rights of those not in the majority? Drawing upon material from your readings and the lectures, did the framers successfully balance this tension? Why or why not? (Shipan, 2008). In addition to measuring complex thinking and reasoning, advantages of presentation essays include the potential for motivating better study habits and providing the students flexibility in their responses. Instructors can evaluate how well students are able to communicate their reasoning with essay items, and they are usually less time consuming to construct than multiple-choice items that measure reasoning. The major disadvantages of essays include the amount of time instructors must devote to reading and scoring student responses, and the importance of developing and using carefully constructed criteria/rubrics to insure reliability of scoring. Essays can assess only essay, a limited amount of content in one testing period/exam due to the length of time required for students to respond to each essay item.

As a result, essays do not provide a good sampling of content knowledge across a curriculum (Gronlund Linn, 1990; McMillan, 2001). Guidelines for presentation, writing essay questions include the following (Gronlund Linn, 1990; McMillan, 2001; Worthen, et al., 1993): Restrict the use of culture essay questions to educational outcomes that are difficult to measure using other formats. For example, to test recall knowledge, true-false, fill-in-the-blank, or multiple-choice questions are better measures. Identify the specific skills and knowledge that will be assessed. Piontek (2008, available online: http://www.crlt.umich.edu/sites/default/files/resource_files/CRLT_no24.pdf) gives several examples of question stems that assess different types of reasoning skills, such as: Generalizations : State a set of principles that can explain the following events. Synthesis : Write a well-organized report that shows Evaluation : Describe the strengths and weaknesses of Write the question clearly so that students do not feel that they are guessing at “what the instructor wants me to do.” Indicate the amount of time and effort students should spend on each essay item. Avoid giving students options for which essay questions they should answer.

This choice decreases the validity and reliability of the test because each student is essentially taking a different exam. Consider using several narrowly focused questions (rather than one broad question) that elicit different aspects of students’ skills and knowledge. Make sure there is ms thesis, enough time to answer the questions. Guidelines for scoring essay questions include the following (Gronlund Linn, 1990; McMillan, 2001; Wiggins, 1998; Worthen, et al., 1993; Writing and dog photo grading essay questions , 1990): Outline what constitutes an expected answer. Select an appropriate scoring method based on the criteria. A rubric is a scoring key that indicates the criteria for scoring and the amount of points to ms thesis presentation, be assigned for each criterion. A sample rubric for a take-home history exam question might look like the following: Number of references to class reading sources. Lots of inaccuracies. No apparent inaccuracies. No argument made; little evidence for review business, argument. Argument is vague and unevenly supported by evidence.

Argument is ms thesis, clear and well-supported by evidence. Many grammar and spelling errors. Few (1-2) grammar or spelling errors. No grammar or spelling errors. Total Points (out of 8 possible): Clarify the role of writing mechanics and other factors independent of the educational outcomes being measured. For example, how does grammar or use of scientific notation figure into dog photo your scoring criteria? Create anonymity for students’ responses while scoring and create a random order in which tests are graded (e.g., shuffle the pile) to increase accuracy of the scoring. Use a systematic process for scoring each essay item. Assessment guidelines suggest scoring all answers for an individual essay question in one continuous process, rather than scoring all answers to all questions for an individual student. This system makes it easier to remember the ms thesis criteria for scoring each answer.

Evaluation essays are just like reviews. They judge whether something is good or bad, better or worse than something comparable. We are familiar with this sort of writing if we've read book, movie, restaurant, or product reviews. Ms Thesis Presentation? Evaluation papers can be serious or funny, earnest or sarcastic. We all love to read the review of essay, a really bad movie or restaurant experience. Presentation? If you like to write satire, this can be a great opportunity to analysis, display your humor.

Chances are you will have a great time, and presentation, so will your reader. Your topic can be something you've experienced once or many times. Choose something you've experienced recently or that you can review again before you write your paper. Know a lot about this type of experience. Use the following list of categories to learning summary, brainstorm ideas for ms thesis what you might want to evaluate. Finding Criteria for review business Evaluation Essays. To turn your opinion into an evaluation, you will need to use criteria to judge your subject. What are criteria?

Criteria are the parts of presentation, your topic that you will judge as good or bad, better or worse than something else. How can you find criteria? Criteria are the parts of the dog photo, thing you are evaluating. Here are some examples of criteria: movie criteria : plot, actors, scenery, score, directing, chemistry between actors, humor. restaurant criteria: service, atmosphere, food quality, taste, value, price. Presentation? website criteria: ease of navigation, design, visuals, writing, content. Finding the best criteria for your evaluation: In order to do this kind of writing well, you need to determine what sort of a topic you are evaluating. If it is a movie, then what genre is dog photo it: horror, romance, drama, etc.? Then you need to ms thesis presentation, decide what would make an excellent movie in that genre in your opinion. For example, you may decide that a good romantic comedy has to have three things: humor, surprising plot twists, and actors you enjoy getting to know. Next, you will evaluate the movie you have chosen to see how well it matches those criteria, giving specific examples of how it does or does not fulfill your expectations of an excellent romantic comedy.

In order to evaluate something, you need to compare it with the best example of that particular thing. So, to help you develop your topic into an essay, there are two important questions to ask when you are choosing your topic to evaluate: First question: What category of narrative essay about bullying, a thing is it? Second question: What is the ideal example of something in that category? What category is it? For the best evaluation essay, you want to compare your topic with things that are very similar, so try to narrow the category as much as possible. To get there, you want to keep on asking the question, What kind is ms thesis presentation it? What category does McDonald's fit into?

Answer to first question : Restaurant. (What kind of restaurant?) Fast food restaurant. (Better, but what kind of fast food?) Hamburger-serving fast food restaurant. (This is what you want!) So if you were evaluating McDonald's, you would want to essay analysis, compare it to other fast food restaurants that mostly serve hamburgers. Now the second question: What is the ms thesis, ideal example of event essays, something in that category? What makes that example better than others? Thinking about what you consider to be the very best example of something in the category of what you are reviewing can help you decide what criteria you will use, and also what judgement you can make. For example, here is a list of criteria my students have come up with for presentation an ideal burger fast food restaurant: looks clean serves food fast makes it easy to order has great fries has options on the menu offers large drinks with free refills serves juicy burgers with lots of grease doesn't cost a lot of money. No two people will come up with exactly the dog photo, same list, but most restaurant reviews look at the following criteria: Answer to second question: A great fast food burger joint offers great service, atmosphere, and food at a fair cost.

Now you know what your paper is going to be about how close McDonald's comes to ms thesis presentation, this ideal. Is This an Effective Advertisement? Using the list of essays, criteria above, we can make a very fast outline for ms thesis presentation an essay about an imaginary fast food hamburger restaurant called Bob's Burgers: Thesis Statement : While you may have to event essays, wait a while to get your meal at Bob's Burgers, that is because everyone finds the ms thesis presentation, meal is worth the wait; Bob's Burgers offers not only dog photo great service, but a fun atmosphere for eating with friends or family, terrific food, and a good value for the price. Looks clean Attractive colors Interesting pictures or other decorations Comfortable tables and presentation, chairs. Topic sentence for paragraph 3: Food: Most importantly, Bob's burgers are the review business, best in ms thesis presentation, town. Juicy burgers with lots of grease Many choices for toppings, including grilled onions, mushrooms, and peppers Small or large burgers Have great fries One downside: No options for those who don't like burgers. Topic sentence for dog photo essays paragraph 4: Value : While Bob's doesn't have the ms thesis, cheapest meals, they do offer a good value for the price.

Quality ingredients Burgers and personal, fries fill you up Toppings on burgers are free Large drinks with free refills. Comparison/Contrast: Evaluate your subject by comparing it to one of the dog photo, best of that genre (use something everyone would know to ms thesis, save time). You will not do an extended comparison, but just use the comparison as a lead-off into your own judgment. Expectations Unfulfilled: This is especially easy to do for douglass to read summary this essay type. Use the intro to describe what you were anticipating before seeing the subject, then describe how the subject was either better or worse than you expected. Ms Thesis Presentation? Frame : Use a description of the subject to frame the essay.

That way you get right into the action. Then break off half-way through to keep your reader in on task analysis, suspense. Give your evaluation and then conclude with the end of your frame. Define Genre and Compare: In this essay, you would start out by describing the typical expectations of whatever subject you have (ex: rock album, romantic movie, baseball game, jazz club). After describing the ms thesis presentation, “typical,” you will then tell how your subject either exemplifies the dog photo, genre or deviates from the presentation, norm. Probably this type of event essays, organization is presentation best used for a satire or for a subject that deliberately tries to break out of the normal expectations of that genre. Then you order your criteria chronologically, spatially, or in presentation, order of importance. Chronological Order : You might use this for all or part of your paper. Event Essays? It means telling what happened in the order it happened.

This is particularly useful for a performance or restaurant review. Causal Analysis: This measures the effect on ms thesis, the audience. How does this subject cause a certain effect? Analysis Focused on the Visual: This organization plan works well for analyzing works of art and pictures. The analysis focuses on composition, arrangement, focus, foreground and background, symbols, cultural references, and key features of that visual genre. It also notices the essays, tools of the ms thesis presentation, artist: color, shape, texture, pattern, and media. This paper analyzes these details in order to explain how they are related to the cultural and historical context of the work of art and dog photo, then tells how they relate to the overall meaning of the piece. Usually, the image is about a controversial or emotionally charged cultural or historical event. Your analysis can describe how this image either demonstrates or contributes to the emotion or debate surrounding the event.

It may be that the image is presentation ironic or misleading. The only problem with our example above is that it is so easy to write, and so it might seem rather trite and culture, unoriginal.
