Bar Study Tip: Bar Exam Essays—You Must Become an Expert at Reading the langone essays, Facts. When I work with students, I often find that I need to remind them that one of their jobs while preparing for essay competition in pakistan 2011, the bar exam is to become an expert fact pattern reader . Now this may sound kind of silly. At this point in your legal studies you have likely read hundreds of fact patterns. Nyu Stern Langone. Aren’t you an expert already? I will argue that if you are struggling with the essay portion of the bar exam, you are not. What is an expert fact pattern reader ? Let’s use the essay writing in pakistan, following example from a real California Bar question (July 2010). While walking home, Don had to essays pass through a police checkpoint for contraband. Executive Resume Nyc. Officer Otis patted down Don’s clothing, found a gun, confiscated it, and released Don. Read these facts very carefully; what issues do you see? Make yourself a list.

Now that you have your list, compare it to nyu stern essays my list: Validity of the checkpoint Validity of the pat down. Now perhaps your list is the galloway essays algorithmic, same as mine. But I have read a lot of failing answers to langone the question above and galloway gaming essays algorithmic culture the most common mistake was that students skimmed over a very simple word: “checkpoint.” That single word created a legal issue that needed to be discussed. Nyu Stern Essays. This wasn’t just a typical pat down. This was done at essay a checkpoint and there are specific legal standards that must be met for a search to be valid at a checkpoint. When I see students miss such an langone issue, I ask them why. The most common responses are “I didn’t see the word checkpoint” or, in my opinion even worse, “I didn’t think it was important.” Let’s take a moment here to stop and pay very close attention. There are no immaterial facts in writing spent a bar question . Langone Essays. Bar questions are typically short, carefully written, and vetted before being included in a test. There is very little to no “fluff.” If you see a word like checkpoint, there is a reason for essay writing competition 2011, it.

It is there to give you something to talk about! How do I become an expert fact pattern reader? So what do you do if you aren’t very good at reading facts? You need to nyu stern essays experiment with different ways to get better at reading facts. A few exercises you might find helpful: (1) Make a note of galloway gaming, each fact in the fact pattern. As you are reading the question, make a mark next to langone essays each fact (a little box or a star). Start to notice how each sentence has at least one important fact in it. When you outline your answer, go back to the question and check off each of the facts you have used. If you have a complete answer, it is likely you have discussed all of them. If you haven’t discussed all of the facts, then ask yourself why the bar examiner included that fact in the question.

He was trying to tell you something. Include whatever that is in essay writing in pakistan your outline. (2) Write your own fact pattern. Langone. Another way to fully appreciate how facts relate to an essay answer is to write your own fact pattern based on of the cognitive in critical thinking has to do with ability critique a set of rules. This puts you in essays the shoes of the bar examiner. Let’s say you want to have the fictional student talk about the aqa french coursework, rule for burglary, specifically whether or not a dwelling must be an actual house or can be extended to buildings connected to nyu stern langone homes or even office spaces. Perhaps you write a fact pattern where the defendant enters a home office that is located in one’s garage attached to a home. Why a garage and not a house? Because the exam writer wants you to talk about the definition of a dwelling and how strict a legal interpretation the definition is given (for example, can a garage count as a dwelling?). (Note: This fact pattern is from an actual bar question from July 2011.) Writing your own fact patterns is not easy, but it is a great way to test your knowledge of the law and your appreciation of how facts trigger certain legal discussions. Remember, you won’t get all the possible points if you don’t understand what the bar examiners are asking you. You must become an galloway gaming essays algorithmic culture expert fact reader in order to write a complete exam answer. Essays. Want more useful bar exam advice?

TOP TEN COMICS CRITICISM MISTAKES. Used, often as a headline, with popular variant “Comics Aren’t Just For Kids Anymore.” This line is nyu stern essays, so notorious amongst comics folk that it is often referred to essay writing how i spent my holidays, in acronym form (CAFKA). Here’s the thing: comics haven’t just been for kids since, oh, the essays 1960s. Underground comics (“comix”) combined counterculture subject matter (sex, drugs, rock and roll, etc.) with some of the which of the skills to judge artistic techniques from syndicated newspaper cartoons, mid-century horror comics and essays, animation. Virtually none of it is essay writing how i, “kid-safe,” although I’m sure many contemporary cartoonists owe their vocations to surreptitious perusal of Mom and Dad’s poorly concealed collections of R. Crumb and RAW . Furthermore, the sorts of comics that contemporary English-speakers often associate with “kid-friendly” reading – superhero comics – have veered towards an adult audience since the mid-1980s. Did you see The Dark Knight? The Batman movie where Heath Ledger drives a pencil into a guy’s eye-socket by langone slamming his head onto coursework ums the table? That sort of langone, thing happens in superhero comics all the which of the cognitive skills in critical thinking has to your ability critique time. Langone. “Kid-friendly” titles are the exception, not the rule, and it’s been that way since I wore Osh Kosh B’Gosh overalls in size 3T. So. Aqa French. Stop leading with this phrase; your news story is essays, decades out of essay writing in pakistan, date.

As a related sub-genre, I sometimes encounter the nyu stern langone essays critic who gives a comic book a bad review because the comic is (deep breath of smelling salts here) not for children . Skills Thinking Has To Do With Your Ability. They are tripping along reviewing this strange little children’s picture-novel when OH MY LORD AND SAVIOR, violence (or worse yet, boobs )! Certainly, some adult humans will be shocked to nyu stern, learn that they cannot simply pick up a comic book and aqa french ums, hurl it at the nearest child. But you’re smarter than that, more sophisticated than that, and you don’t want to waste your precious critical energy on these people. They are too busy being upset about the internet. In short: some comic books are for kids; some are just for essays adults. Plenty more will appeal to just about anybody. Comics are a medium, not a toy. The content – not the package – will tell you who should be reading. Often used in conjunction with “Comics Aren’t For Kids Anymore.” Other, equivalent sound effects are common (SOKK! etc.), and variant headlines or leads include “Holy [insert word] , Batman!”

These phrases seem to derive from the 1960’s Adam West Batman TV show, which superimposed lettered “sound effects” during campy fight scenes; the “Holy [whatever], Batman!” was the essay writing competition 2011 Robin line that Burt Ward was forced to langone essays, utter in endless variance. Neither of time, these phrases have much relevance to actual comic books ( Batman or otherwise), and the datedness of the TV show reference is justification alone for avoiding these moldy chestnuts. And, lest you cling to this language for some illusion of originality or catchiness, a quick Google search for “biff pow zap” turns up ALL of these headlines: Bang! Pow! Zap! HEROES ARE BACK! – Time Magazine, 1986. Biff! Pow!

Likewise, I encourage you to avoid harping on these tired cliches: people who dress up in costume at conventions (they’re normal people having fun on their day off) the Comic Book Guy from nyu stern langone essays, The Simpsons anything along the series thesis line of “pale guys who live in Mom’s basement” any and langone, all unbidden Star Trek or Star Wars references. Don’t go there, friends. We’ve already been.

EXAMPLE: “With the box-office success of The Avengers, comic books haven proven their appeal to a wide audience.” In its most painful incarnation, this sentence will kick off a review of, say, an autobiographical memoir about the artist’s childhood in the slums of Bangladesh. The point is: movies based on comic book properties are not necessarily relevant to all of comics. Of The Cognitive Skills Do With To Judge Critique. (Shocking though it may seem, many comic books have no direct relevance even to other comic books ) . Would you start a review of a literary novel with the sentence “With the nyu stern langone box-office success of Twilight , novels have proven their appeal to coursework, a wide audience”? No, you wouldn’t, because (a) it’s patently silly and (b) it doesn’t say anything about the nyu stern langone actual work you’re supposedly addressing. If you must reference the recent blockbuster, a better approach might be something like “while Marvel Comics has sought out a wider audience by adapting its characters for blockbuster flicks like The Avengers , Publisher X has focused on fostering mature, original voices in non-fiction memoir.” Give it your own spin. #4. Coursework Ums. “Non-fiction graphic novel” OR “this isn’t a comic book. It’s a graphic novel.” This confusion was probably inevitable. The way people talk about comics has changed a great deal in the last thirty years. Let us try to set the nyu stern langone essays record straight!

God help us. Comics (generally singular , despite the s ) is the medium. You may also (though much less frequently) hear sequential art. A comic is any complete work in the comics medium, regardless of essay writing 2011, genre or length. Rather like “film” or “poem.” A comic book is, for langone the sake of definition, any complete work made in the comics medium that is long enough to involve several pages of material or have a collective title. If it were printed, would you have to of the cognitive in critical your ability to judge, staple it to langone, keep it all together? Great.

Let’s call it a comic book, then. A graphic novel is a complete work of fiction in the comics form which, if printed, is long enough to be bound as a trade volume, so with a glued or sewn spine. (How’s that for essay writing competition 2011 arbitrary?) It is a novel, just as Jane Eyre is a novel, but it is told in comics, not prose. “Graphic novel” is basically a very clever marketing term that allows booksellers, librarians, and essays, other nervous adults to have a shorthand for “book-length thing of comics that we can sell for ums over ten dollars and doesn’t make you look like a pedophile for reading in public.” Unlike many people in the comics business, I don’t mind the (fairly new) term, because it’s done great things to langone, convince people who aren’t avid comics readers that it’s okay to pick up a comic book now and again without fearing their book group’s scorn. When people ask me what the difference is between a comic book and a graphic novel, I say that all graphic novels are comic books, but not all comic books are graphic novels. Then they look confused, and resume, we change the subject.

Hitch #2 inherent to the term “graphic novel” – the word “novel” implies “fiction” which is to say “stuff that didn’t actually happen to anybody.” While I have no sacred commitment to “novel” (since it originally connoted “sordid fad that is corrupting our women and children”), it is rather awkward and confusing to nyu stern langone, refer to essay how i spent, something as a “non-fiction graphic novel” since this translates to “book-length work of nyu stern langone essays, non-fiction comics fiction.” Even more awkwardly, thanks to the multiple meanings of the word “graphic”, if you remove the term “novel” and swap in a more accurate genre description, like “memoir”, you get embarrassing locutions like “ graphic memoir ” which can be mistaken to time, mean “ prose memoir which involves lots of intense sex and violence .” (The Toronto Comic Arts Festival famously instructs its American guests to avoid using the term “graphic novels” at the border, since many customs agents hear “graphic” and think “pornography.”) I have no good solution for langone essays this one, and nobody else has come up with a consistent reference. Eventually I’d love to writing spent, hear “comics” replace “graphic” and nyu stern langone, thus hear about cognitive in critical do with your ability to judge, “comics novel” or “comics memoir,” but only time will tell. In the meantime, tread with caution and consult the nyu stern oracles. These words are frequently used, in comics criticism and in executive nyc criticism in general, as stand-ins for “dumb,” “wacky,” “brightly-colored,” “outlandish,” and “lurid and kinetic with no intellectual or emotional core.” Friends: I challenge you to read David Mazzucchelli’s masterpiece novel Asterios Polyp and apply any of those descriptive terms to it. (Well, it is brightly colored, but there’s symbolism , so it doesn’t count.) I think it’s fine to use “cartoonish” to describe a simple and essays, exaggerated portrayal.

That’s been in use for quite some time, since the heyday of illustration. And obviously the term is aqa french coursework ums, also acceptable to explain where on the spectrum of stylization an nyu stern, artist’s work falls – Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi is drawn in a style that is much more “cartoony” than, say, The Killing Joke (drawn by Brian Bolland, written by Alan Moore), which is far more “realistic .” It’s also fine to aqa french ums, use “comic-book-y” to describe a work that intentionally emulates a type of comics work; Lichtenstein, for example, was grabbing directly from comics sources, and nyu stern essays, there are plenty of movies that draw story and which of the skills has to your ability critique, style inspiration from nyu stern, certain kinds of galloway gaming essays algorithmic culture, comics. But it’s foolish to assume that the langone readers knows WHICH kind of comics you’re talking about. Which In Critical Thinking Has To Do With Critique. What you really mean is essays, “this work is reminiscent of my personal stereotypes about of the in critical thinking your, a medium with which I’m obviously not overly familiar.” And you don’t want to write that, do you? Call out a specific type of comic – “reminiscent of Golden Age Marvel comic books, bright and punchy” or find another descriptor. In the meantime, if you’d like a more in-depth discussion of the aesthetics and langone, function of visual style in ums comics, pick up a copy of Scott McCloud’s landmark book Understanding Comics . Would you describe brushstrokes as “paint patches” or a song bridge as “transition verse?” Would you call a fictional plot an nyu stern langone essays, “event structure” or a pas de deux a “two-person dance?” No, you would not, because you’re a professional, and you make it a point to understand the terms that define the medium you are concerned with. Nor would you spend overmuch time in a review defining these terms for readers, since it behooves you to assume that they are already interested in what you are talking about (and are capable of looking up terms they don’t recognize). One of the most common errors is to mis-refer to the visual/textual device by which characters in skills in critical your to judge comics traditionally “speak.” These are word balloons. A contiguous chunk of narrative text not uttered directly by nyu stern langone a character but instead superimposed over the imagery is typically called a caption . Competition In Pakistan. Closed, discrete image units, which generally depict a distinct chunk of time or space – are panels.

The spaces between panels are gutters. (Please, no puns; they’ve already been made.) There are plenty of other terms – including many that are shared with prose and film – but those are the most essential. No neologisms required. If you’re looking for some further reference on comics vocabulary (and you are), I recommend browsing the following widely-published titles, all of which are appropriate for a general audience: Understanding Comics , Scott McCloud.

Drawing Words and Writing Pictures , Matt Madden and Jessica Abel. The Complete Idiot’s Guide to langone essays, Creating a Graphic Novel , Nat Gertler and essay spent my holidays, Steve Lieber. #7. This muffin is so good that it’s actually a bagel. Oh, I do love this one, and by love I mean that it can induce me to hurl an nyu stern, otherwise a respectable publication across the executive resume room. In this case, the reviewer has been sentenced to read and then write about a comic book. There are two varieties, one seen mostly in smaller, local publications and blogs, and the other in publications of a hoity-toity bent. VARIANT #1: I Don’t Come Here Often, But… The first kind of reviewer undertakes her task with a great deal of foot-dragging and essays, exculpatory phrases about how they aren’t “big graphic novel boosters.” Here’s a classic example, from a recent issue of the Seattle Times: I, like many other rampant bibliophiles, am a reluctant reader of graphic books. Galloway Algorithmic. Yet, a few pages into Alison Bechdel’s latest memoir, “Are You My Mother?” (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 290 pp., $22), I was hooked despite the nyu stern langone essays comic-book format.

To me, all this paragraph says is “I’m reluctant to try anything that challenges my arbitrary habits, and I’m probably not qualified to nyc, review this book in a larger cultural context.” Or maybe (even less charitably) “Oh my gosh, I’m SO not that kind of annoying nerd! Please don’t dismiss my intellectual seriousness for langone liking this one comic book. If I convince other people to essay competition in pakistan, like it, then maybe I won’t feel so uncomfortable!” I appreciate what the writer is trying to do – reach out to other reluctant readers. (Because that’s what you are in this case, kids: reluctant readers. Not “rampant bibliophiles.”) There’s really something to essays, be said for a “come on in, the water’s fine” approach to convincing the status-anxious to pick up a new kind of book. But you’re not doing yourself or those readers any favors by wincing your way through your appraisal of the work at hand. The most “rampant bibliophiles” I know don’t dismiss a potentially great book just because of its format or genre. So instead of making yourself look narrow-minded, why don’t you just open your review with praise of the book, as you would for any other title of merit? Then, if you’re worried that people will be hesitant to read on, emphasize that the series forecasting thesis material has the potential to be both accessible and appealing to prose readers. Not all writers are well-intentioned, of nyu stern, course.

Some of culture, them see themselves as arbiters of nyu stern essays, high culture and comics as a party crasher. This sort of person seems to look forward to executive nyc, writing a vicious takedown. He opens with some flippant references to a legacy newspaper strip like Hagar the nyu stern Horrible or a sniffy description of the manga collections that his teenaged niece reads in a corner at Thanksgiving while the coursework grown-ups quaff sherry and discuss matters of langone, international diplomacy. Now that the gaming algorithmic culture critic has safely established that he’s not one of “those” people, he brings up the actual comic book he’s been paid to read. To his infinite horror, he finds that it is nyu stern essays, pretty good. There will be a few stumbling paragraphs of essays, praise – why, this is reminiscent of fine literature! The pictures and the words combine to create meaning beyond what each individually represents! And then there will be a stunning piece of rationalization. Because this comic book is nyu stern essays, really good, it must not ACTUALLY be a comic book.

(Or, this comic book is essays algorithmic, so good, it doesn’t seem RIGHT to essays, call it a comic book. ) There are certainly examples of work that exists to comment on its own form or genre – deconstruction, meta-commentary, appropriation, satire; pick your Trojan horse. It it work that takes on a form just to piss on that form. Every medium has its anarchists, and of the cognitive in critical has to do with to judge, being able to recognize that intention is nyu stern langone essays, a valuable critical skill. But just because something is better (in your opinion) than many of its peer works does not mean that it is a commentary on its medium, or that the which cognitive your ability to judge medium ceases to nyu stern, apply. The critic’s assumption that “comic book” connotes “low culture” doesn’t make the executive nyc work at hand any less of a comic book, or any less of an artistic achievement. All you’re doing with this kind of rationalization is revealing your own discomfort about liking something you don’t think you’re supposed to. Nyu Stern Langone. Which is ridiculous. In Pakistan. This is comic books, not heroin or blood diamonds or Celine Dion. #8. Comics: A Bold Artistic Choice for nyu stern langone a Cartoonist. The reviewer observes that the cartoonist in essay in pakistan 2011 question has, in fact, produced something very good, and perhaps not typical of the reviewer’s notion of what a comic book is nyu stern essays, like.

The reviewer acknowledges that the comic book creator is, in which cognitive in critical thinking to judge critique fact, a first-rank talent – somebody whose abilities could potentially shine through in other media, as well. (She’s not comic book pretty…she’s literature pretty!) From this, the critic concludes that the creator is, in fact, making a bold artistic choice by composing her work in nyu stern essays this medium. How brave of gaming essays, her – and what does it mean? What is the significance of langone, this choice for the story? Why isn’t it a novel, or a screenplay, which are things that grownups make? If David Mitchell took up macrame the critic would hardly be less perplexed. The critic will think all these things in apparent ignorance of the fact that the creator in question has been making comics – exclusively comics – for her entire career . Thesis. She is essays, not a prose novelist in a cartoonist suit for an evening. Resume Service. She is, in fact, a cartoonist. She might be making bold artistic choices within her chosen medium, but comics aren’t a “choice” any more than it’s a “choice” for Steven Spielberg to make a movie.

There are indeed cases where a creator works in several media, and nyu stern essays, chooses to work in comics for specific story or audience reasons. This is more often true of creators who provide just the writing or just the art and create comics as part of a collaborative team. And some creators genuinely do “moonlight” in comics, as a side venture within a career focused elsewhere. There’s a simple way to determine which kind of creator you’re dealing with: Google them. Time Series. Look up their work. Figure out nyu stern langone, what the comics-to-other-stuff ratio is. Then decide if what this creator is doing really constitutes a “bold artistic choice,” or merely what she was born to do . #9. Resume Nyc. The Unbearable Lightness of Word Balloons. A related genre of critical overreaching.

The critic encounters standard elements of comics work – word balloons, square panels, standard layouts – and immediately interprets them as meaningful to the content of the work. This is another example of the critic’s own ignorance coming out to play. Nyu Stern. Imagine if a critic wrote (of a prose novel) that “the straightness of the lines of text reflect the narrator’s matter-of-fact perception of the world, and the ordering of the aqa french coursework ums letters from left-to-right functions as a subtle reference to his growing political conservatism as he comes of age over the course of the novel.” This would be silly. Nyu Stern Langone Essays. Likewise, a painting executed on a rectangular canvas is not automatically assumed to be commenting on the nature of the essay how i spent rectangle.

There are plenty of formalist experimenters in nyu stern langone essays comics (pick up a Chris Ware title and watch him go). Gaming Essays. However, the odds are that the book you’re reading is one of the other 95%, the nyu stern kind of writing how i spent my holidays, work that uses standard formal elements as a vehicle for essays subject matter beyond the borders of the medium itself. Time Series Thesis. The form is meant to become invisible, or at least not draw more attention to itself more than is necessary to enjoy and understand the essays work. The only cure for a critic prone to over-analysis is to resume nyc, read enough comic books that it becomes clear when a formal element is routine, and langone, when it’s being used more creatively. Tough break, right? But, in comic books as in everything, you have to walk before you can run.

Another error bred by too narrow a reading list. A critic reads a comic book (“Book A”) and of the in critical thinking your to judge critique, finds some aspect of it striking. Nyu Stern Langone. September 22 2012 / 2:31 am. I love me some blood diamonds, though. September 23 2012 / 2:59 am. Read the article and not convinced. In fact it was so precious and defensive about the medium as to almost prove in of itself how frivolous it is. Langone. Comics are for fun, leave it at that.

Great literature requires the expression of ideas, and the expression of ideas requires words, lots and lots of words. Get over it, and then read a real book. September 23 2012 / 11:52 am. Hi Gary! I think you’re quite wrong about comics, and essay spent my holidays, your response suggests that your reading list could use broadening – you’re really missing out on some incredibly thoughtful books of genuine merit. (I’d tell you to give Alison Bechdel’s “Fun Home” a go.) I would also tell you that there are many readers of exclusively prose who read nothing but thrillers, romance, horror, or humor, and enjoy nothing else; there’s nothing wrong with that, but it also says nothing about the nyu stern possibilities of intellectually ambitious books.

Danielle Steele and James Joyce aren’t mutually exclusive. The same is true of comics. Many of my favorite comics are fun and frivolous (brilliantly so!); many of them are by contrast quite serious and trenchant. And most of them do have words. Lots and lots of words. Also lots and lots of pictures, which are quite capable of essay, presenting complex information in a mode inaccessible to langone essays, the abstractions of prose (unless you think all of art history is a canard, in which case, godspeed). Is film incapable of conveying complex thought? Or theater?

Both of those combine words and of the in critical ability to judge critique, images to create narrative. Perhaps you simply only langone, enjoy funny comics, in the way that plenty of people only enjoy thriller novels. But that is aqa french ums, something to langone, do with your tastes as a reader. Essays. You are supported in this by the historical trend in English-language comics, which means there’s more frivolity on sale than profundity. But novels were also considered to be frivolous when they first appeared (as many of them were); poetry and scholarly monographs were what serious readers were supposed to stick to. Luckily nowadays we can have our cake and eat it too. And I promise you that I’m an ardent prose-reader; on a given evening, odds are 85-15 in favor of me reading a book without pictures. Nyu Stern Essays. I’m happy to bang on about The Greats, my favorite novel is Middlemarch, I can tell you all about terza rima in essay writing spent Dante, I have suffered through Heidegger, I can drone all you like about christological symbolism in 20th century Russian surrealist fiction, yadda yadda yadda. I’m no genius, but I’ve had a so-called classical education. I loved it. I also love comics.

I do know the difference between fizz and substance. And I also know from personal experience as a reader and langone essays, creator that comics are perfectly capable of being either. It’s a young medium, and one I’m excited to contribute to. Maybe comics hasn’t had its James Joyce yet; that just means that position hasn’t yet been filled. How exciting is that for a young creator? It’s quite a shame you haven’t found the time forecasting thesis comic book that changes your mind, but I can’t force you to nyu stern langone, be curious. Luckily, there are enough titles on this earth to keep us all satisfied indefinitely.

October 1 2012 / 5:00 pm. If the expression of ideas requires words, that would mean that fine art and executive nyc, music are worthless, including all classical music and essays, the work of the resume greatest Renaissance masters. After all, they didn’t use words to express themselves, which I guess makes them ‘frivolous’ and nyu stern essays, ‘just for fun’. September 23 2012 / 3:53 am. How not to write how-not-to articles: use the phrase ‘still not a very dominant medium’ . Even if you don’t know why this is technically wrong the sound of it ought to wound your ear enough to avoid it. September 23 2012 / 3:02 pm. Your tone is annoying and victim-y. September 23 2012 / 3:28 pm. I’m not a victim at all; I do something that I love for writing how i spent a living. I can’t hide my frustration with something that affects me as a professional, but I can temper my response with humor and langone, try to focus on providing helpful information instead of just whining or trying to nail people to the wall.

I’m sorry it’s not your flavor; I more than welcome alternative takes on this subject. Which Of The Cognitive Skills Critique. Cheers! September 24 2012 / 9:58 am. (^Oh god, just delete the one-sentence-or-less-unpleasant-jackass-comments, if they don’t see other troll comments they won’t bother writing any. Trust me, it works, and it doesn’t make you a bad person.)

Anyway, as Someone Who Makes Comix For Some Reason i just wanted to thank you for sticking up for nyu stern essays the medium like this, it’s really a necessary article. It’s so hard to of the has to do with your to judge, get any goddamn media attention to begin with, and then even if you’ve got a bestselling graphic novel odds are the reviews will be just as asinine as the examples you cite above (although this seems to be less of a problem in the UK, in langone my experience of essays, reading various reviews over time, so there IS hope). I’m just glad you took the time to actually write all this out, you do us all a favor for nyu stern essays sure. I think the key sentence is this one: “A critic reads a comic book (“Book A”) and finds some aspect of it striking. Series. The critic has only read one other comic book (B). Nyu Stern. The critic then adds two and two and gets seventeen: clearly, Book A is deeply influenced by Book B. ” That is, after decades, we’re unbelievably STILL in the phase where the medium is seen not as a medium but as a genre (or sub-genre), and thus if you like one comic you’ll like them all, or vice versa. And there’s some truth to that, unfortunately!

As a kid i would read anything that came in comics format regardless of subject matter, and i know i wasn’t alone in that, and i also know that’s completely untrue of any other medium. In addition, there’s still a narrow range of voices operating in the medium compared with things like music or prose literature, which certainly contributes to time series thesis, any accusations of sameness among any two given graphic novels. It is nyu stern essays, NOT a genre obviously, it most certainly IS a medium, but there are certain internal peculiarities that contribute to it being erroneously seen as one big set of interrelated content. There’s the semi-famous (?) Brad Bird quote about how animation is not a genre, it’s a technique, and that’s the same battle we have in executive resume nyc comix. And the answer of course is to nyu stern essays, grow the aqa french coursework medium, to have it appear to a greater variety of langone, people as An Option when they’re deciding what to do with their lives (and webcomics have been a HUGE step forward in this regard, the increasing diversity is of the skills thinking has to, outstanding). And the ONLY way to get over the tipping point in that regard is with the help of the media. And the only way they’ll help is by actually taking the medium seriously.

And i reckon articles like this are most certainly a step in that direction, so, again, cheers, and a firm handshake in your direction. September 24 2012 / 11:45 am. Haha! Don’t worry, I only respond to nyu stern essays, short comments when I think my response will be instructive to other people reading the post. Thanks for your thoughtful response!

September 24 2012 / 10:15 am. Excellent stuff. Galloway Gaming Essays Algorithmic Culture. I’d only add that comics didn’t stop being for kids in the 1960s. In the USA at langone, least they STARTED OUT not being for has to do with your to judge kids – from the very beginning. Nyu Stern Langone. Mutt and gaming essays algorithmic, Jeff, perhaps the first successful daily newspaper strip, started out on the sports pages of an SF newspaper (under the title of langone, A. Mutt) and was clearly aimed at adult readers. Comics in the USA are initially a newspaper phenomenon (something you’d think more journalists would understand) and it was GROWNUPS who bought newspapers – not kids. Not that I have anything against great children’s literature or comics that are created for an all-ages audience. Some of my favorite comics are kids comics. Just because something is aimed at children doesn’t mean it can’t be insightful, profound, moving, and artistically important. BTW, some of us academics are working on galloway essays algorithmic culture, trying to nyu stern langone, create a whole new generation of historically informed comics scholars. Essay 2011. Check out the link:

Thanks again for this witty piece. Hope it does some good. September 24 2012 / 10:39 am. Great article. Nyu Stern Langone Essays. I make comics, and read them. Ums. Don’t review much, but I noticed all the faux-pas you mentioned that bugged me for years, even from my favorite websites. Thanks for writing this. September 26 2012 / 12:19 am. “Certainly, some adult humans will be shocked to learn that they cannot simply pick up a comic book and hurl it at the nearest child.” Oh god, I am laughing so hard at nyu stern langone essays, the mental image.

Thank you, that was wonderful! October 1 2012 / 5:03 pm. One of my grandparents once bought her young nephew a copy of Viz. If you don’t know what that is, it features characters such as the time series forecasting Two Fat Slags. Nyu Stern Essays. Enough said. September 28 2012 / 9:15 pm. I think you’re unduly harsh in your criticism of some of the critics. Ums. Who cares if a critic admits that they don’t normally read something, as long as they don’t disparage it? People are entitled to essays, their own personal preferences. “I don’t normally read comics” = no big deal, and a positive review will be all the better from someone that doesn’t normally read them. “Comics are stupid and I was forced to gaming essays, read this” of course not good, but you didn’t seem to be mentioning people saying that.

Personally I don’t think a bibliophile, or book reviewer without a comic-reading background, should review comics, period. Sure, they could evaluate the written portions, but how in the world could they properly evaluate the essays art? Not simply the drawn figures, but also the panel spacing, text flow, etc. One of how i spent my holidays, my biggest beefs with many comics is they lay down panels wherever… Simply put, I don’t feel it’s the critics fault, but the editor’s. Assigning an individual to nyu stern langone, review a comic that has so far only reviewed books, and never read a comic is like taking someone who’s never read a book and asking them to type up a review on a novel. September 28 2012 / 9:18 pm. Honestly, to gaming, follow-up, what editors should do is langone essays, hire comic-readers to gaming algorithmic, review graphic novels. September 29 2012 / 6:57 pm. Now if only someone could explain to me why Anthony Lane of the langone New Yorker insists on reviewing superhero movies when he obviously hates comic books and superheroes! October 1 2012 / 3:53 pm.

Anthony Lane is an entertaining subject writer but I find him very frustrating as a critic. I think his heart lies in which cognitive in critical has to do with your writing longer pieces about cultural figures and that short reviews must irritate him or bore him enough that he uses them as target practice. September 30 2012 / 11:26 pm. Good article, though the problems you’ve listed are not quite so widespread, since most serious comic reviewers tend to know about the world of comics already. Many of these problems are more common with movie reviewers and critics, theres a LOT of nyu stern langone, really bad film critics out there.

October 1 2012 / 11:21 am. I write about comics for a publisher’s blog in Brazil (among other venues) and just published a piece about this post of yours. It’s in Portuguese, so I guess it won’t mean much, but I hope you like it. October 1 2012 / 5:11 pm. I think a large part of the problem is why people look down on any visual medium – because unlike literature, we can instinctively understand them without needing to learn how to comprehend them first. That’s why I usually compare comics, movies or videogames to cognitive thinking has to do with critique, music – we can easily comprehend them, but learning to ‘read’ those mediums and fully understand why you’re enjoying them and how their structural elements combine so effectively takes intelligence and thought. The difference being that music, being as old as time, has long been accepted as an intelligent and valid art form, while the others still have stragglers who assume that having a natural comprehension of those mediums makes them less intelligent. Accessibility does not equal lack of intelligence, and failing to nyu stern langone essays, understand that is what turns people from considered intellectuals into ignorant snobs. October 2 2012 / 9:58 pm.

Really well-written and well argued article, and a valuable tool for anyone who works with or thinks about comics a great deal. The one thing I missed from your ten point list is a crucial one, and that is critics who treat or refer to the pictures as illustrations. This happens a lot when a work has been produced by a multi-person team, with a writer’s name at of the skills has to do with your, the top of the masthead. The writer is nyu stern langone, then for galloway gaming essays culture the duration of the piece treated as the authorial force behind the work, the artist(s) relegated to a perfunctory mention in one of the last few paragraphs. And/or, any remarkable effects achieved by the work is langone essays, attributed to the writer, not the writer and artist(s) in tandem. This seems to me a problem that is prevalent even with more knowledgeable critics, not just the mainstream press writers your list is targeted towards. Anyway, thanks again for essays algorithmic the article, and for taking the time to be so active in langone your comments section, it’s a much appreciated effort. October 3 2012 / 9:29 am.

It’s funny – in coursework ums different venues, either the nyu stern writer OR the ums artist involved in essays a collaborative comic book can be devalued. I’ve seen reviews that talk about nothing but the art, and reviews that talk about nothing but the cognitive your to judge critique writing. I think part of the problem is nyu stern essays, that the creative balance in comics can vary so wildly from project to of the cognitive skills thinking do with your critique, project – there are author-driven books where the nyu stern langone essays artist is essay competition in pakistan, given loads of direction and is basically a hired hand; there are artist-driven books where the writer is nyu stern, there to provide a structure for what amounts to an art showcase; there are completely collaborative books where the essay how i spent my holidays artist is very much co-authoring the book even though the langone essays writer is the one with a script document on her hard drive, or where the series forecasting writer strongly specifies style and imagery. It’s a little more predictable when the work comes from a house like Marvel or DC, where editorial and essays, scheduling expectations demand a certain conformity of process and more clearly defined roles. But the kind of book most likely to coursework, be reviewed in langone essays publications with ‘New York’ in the title is generally a mystery. Of The Cognitive In Critical Has To Do With Critique. Short of interviewing the creators, there’s just no way of nyu stern langone, knowing who can be credited for specific elements. October 3 2012 / 9:31 pm. You’re certainly right about the essay writing competition in pakistan authorial contributions of different individuals involved in a comic being difficult to parse, and difficult in a different way from langone, work to work. That’s precisely what makes it an important thing to executive resume service, consider when analysing a comic. If you are widely read, it becomes a useful angle for approaching the work, providing context for the contributions of the various people involved. And if you’re new to the medium, like the target audience for nyu stern your list, it’s a crucial thing to remember when discussing authorial intent.

Any thoughts on the whole “treating the pictures as illustrations for the text” approach a lot of literary critics tend to take? October 3 2012 / 6:45 pm. Can you imagine if a professional acquaintance of yours grabbed a novel at resume, random from the essays Goodwill book bin and judged all of literature by executive service it? Sadly, there are many people who actually do this. October 11 2012 / 5:23 pm. I just happened to find out essays, about this post yesterday. Today I happened to come across Richard Brody’s piece about middlebrow attacks on highbrow movies: (Not sure if your commenting software will allow links — if not google “Richard Brody O’Hehir Bailey site:www.newyorker.com”.) It’s kind of interesting to see how similar your attack on middlebrow culture from “below” is to Brody’s attack on essay competition, it from “above”. One thing that struck me about Brody’s piece is his point that cinematic technique isn’t opposed to feeling; it’s how movies elicit and express feeling. That got me thinking that perhaps your point 9 is too broad.

I think I know what your real target is: “Like, OMG, the essays pictures actually convey something that couldn’t be put in writing words! Who knew?” But it is interesting to nyu stern essays, observe how the series forecasting thesis very basic formal features of essays, comics work to convey meaning. Writing My Holidays. Exhibit A is McCloud’s discussion of the gutter in langone “Understanding Comics”. His emphasis on the work that the reader has to do in filling in the space between panels is to executive resume, me the most interesting single point in his book. Langone. But of course the gutter is a necessary feature of comics. You can’t have a series of essay how i, drawings without having separation between them. Nyu Stern Langone. In the series thesis right hands, absolutely basic formal features can be interestingly interpreted — even if the creator is langone, not a “formalist experimenter” a la Ware. October 16 2012 / 6:29 am. Alistair Gray, as well as Umberto Eco, seems to be able to get away with pictures in his books (nice pictures they are too). October 16 2012 / 8:34 am.

Came across this article about the recent ‘Marvel Comics the Untold Story’ book by Sean Howe at Salon.com, and which of the cognitive in critical has to do with ability to judge critique, look at the description of the nyu stern langone article: “Bam! Pow! A new history of the iconic comics company reveals the galloway gaming culture bare-knuckled scrapping behind famed superheroes”…looks like the author didn’t read your article, which is great by the way. November 15 2012 / 4:10 pm. My parents are in the category of people who think when something like the NY Times reviews the new Chris Ware book they’ve lowered their standards as if they’re reviewing Tales of nyu stern, Suspense #32. They’re also in the category of people who think because something’s a comic, that means I’ll like it, which is algorithmic culture, like saying “PBS and nyu stern essays, MTV are the same thing because they’re both broadcast through a cathode ray tube.”

January 18 2013 / 7:15 pm. June 10 2013 / 5:48 am. Where I come from the media has a problem with reporting of fmale comic artists. They are like: “LOOK! WOMEN CAN DRAW COMICS! WOW! BREAKING NEWS!” every time they talk about a female comic artist, ignoring that they have been around for quite some time now. June 11 2013 / 9:31 am. That can happen in North America, too, although most often about superhero comics. June 11 2013 / 5:36 am. BAM!

POW! WHIZ! I can’t believe it’s not literature! Just kidding. So perfectly spot on. Glad I ran across your wonderful article which is intelligent and not defensive at all.

This is how comics should be discussed. I was wondering if I can quote you and some of which of the your ability to judge critique, your points for langone a rhetorical piece on the non-acceptance of comics. Title: The Greatest Books You’ve Never Read. June 11 2013 / 9:30 am. Sure, go right ahead!

June 11 2013 / 4:39 pm. June 21 2013 / 2:22 pm. I think critics should think of comics as a medium and not a genre, that way these mistakes would be avoided. The only which cognitive skills in critical ability to judge critique, common ground an action blockbuster has with a student short is the stock they’re shot on, but most of the essays same people that would agree look at aqa french coursework ums, “comics” as one thing painted with a big brush. It’s like assuming Howard Stern and NPR are the same thing. June 21 2013 / 2:47 pm. Woops! I didn’t realize I’d commented on this before several months back.

Sorry about that. I think most of these writers know better but feel the need for such condescension for a general public that feels that way. An article such as yours should be written for those people to prevent CAFKA journalism from being the norm. May 3 2014 / 2:33 am. Excellent article. Finally I have something to point people to langone, when the gaming whole graphic novel debate arises! One thing: I’ve been reading comics for thirty years now, and never once have I seen those referred to as word balloons! They’ve always been speech bubbles to me. I’m now thinking that maybe this is langone essays, a British thing … ? June 1 2014 / 10:26 am.

It’s rare to see a blog post about art that is this entertaining, this on-point, and this insightful. I’ve read /lots/ of blog posts, so I think my bona fides as a critic of the your blog-post genre will hold up #128521; . Your anger is real, but your tone is helpful rather than hateful, and by quoting some of the nyu stern essays egregious criticisms you’ve encountered, you prevent this post from aqa french coursework ums, devolving into langone essays, a rant session (though it works on that level, too). So many pithy, quotable lines! I particularly loved the has to your ability to judge critique muffin ? bagel illustration and this snarky jewel: “while the grown-ups quaff sherry and discuss matters of nyu stern langone, international diplomacy.” October 23 2015 / 4:42 am. This is terrible, and writing competition 2011, true. Nyu Stern Langone. Another of of the in critical do with to judge critique, my comics community in Melbourne, Australia sent me the link to nyu stern langone essays, this, as here we are so far behind the essay writing spent rest of the civilized world with our comics journalism; there isn’t any!

Even actual comics historians will call their exhibition at nyu stern langone, the State library Zap! Pow! Comics aren’t for which in critical has to your to judge kids anymore! *sigh* January 13 2016 / 4:51 pm. In 1979 or around then, the local paper ran a small feature on nyu stern langone essays, my roommate Sam and me, which actually used the which skills has to do with your to judge line (as a headline or subhead), BIFF! BAM! POW! COMICS NOT JUST FOR KIDS ANY MORE.

And even then, we knew it was a goony cliche. It is true, though, that when I was managing a comic shop, I heard women walking by (probably tellers from the nyu stern langone bank across the street or some such) say “Comic books!” and coursework ums, then giggle like Betty and Wilma. Nyu Stern. I told the owner it was a bad location for walk-in. A year or two after firing me, he told me that I was right about that. (Thanks, Chuck!) January 13 2016 / 4:52 pm. ethical values essay Strategic Leadership and Decision Making. Values and ethics are central to any organization; those operating in nyu stern, the national security arena are no exception. What exactly do we mean by values and ethics? Both are extremely broad terms, and we need to focus in on the aspects most relevant for strategic leaders and decision makers. What we will first discuss is the distinctive nature of writing competition in pakistan, ethics for public officials; second, the langone essays, forces which influence the ethical behavior of individuals in organizations; and in critical thinking has to third, explore the actions strategic leaders can take to build ethical climates in their organizations. That someone can be an individual or, collectively, an nyu stern organization. One place where values are important is in relation to executive resume service vision. One of the imperatives for organizational vision is that it must be based on and consistent with the langone, organization's core values. In one example of a vision statement we'll look at later, the writing, organization's core values - in this case, integrity, professionalism, caring, teamwork, and stewardship - were deemed important enough to be included with the statement of the organization's vision. Nyu Stern! Dr. John Johns, in time series thesis, an article entitled The Ethical Dimensions of National Security, mentions honesty and loyalty as values that are the ingredients of integrity. Essays! When values are shared by all members of an essay writing competition 2011 organization, they are extraordinarily important tools for making judgments, assessing probable outcomes of contemplated actions, and choosing among alternatives. Perhaps more important, they put all members on the same sheet of music with regard to essays what all members as a body consider important. The Army, in 1986, had as the theme for the year values, and listed four organizational values -loyalty, duty, selfless service, and integrity-and four individual values - commitment, competence, candor, and courage.

A Department of the Army pamphlet entitled Values: The Bedrock of Our Profession spent some time talking about the importance of values , and included this definition: Values are what we, as a profession, judge to be right. They are more than words-they are the 2011, moral, ethical, and nyu stern langone professional attributes of in pakistan 2011, character . . . there are certain core values that must be instilled in members of the U.S. Army-civilian and uniformed soldier alike. These are not the only values that should determine our character, but they are ones that are central to our profession and should guide our lives as we serve our Nation. Values are the nyu stern essays, embodiment of what an organization stands for, and should be the basis for the behavior of its members. Gaming Algorithmic! However, what if members of the organization do not share and have not internalized the organization's values? Obviously, a disconnect between individual and organizational values will be dysfunctional. Additionally, an organization may publish one set of values, perhaps in nyu stern langone essays, an effort to push forward a positive image, while the values that really guide organizational behavior are very different. When there is a disconnect between stated and operating values , it may be difficult to determine what is which skills thinking has to to judge acceptable. For example, two of the essays, Army's organizational values include candor and courage.

One might infer that officers are encouraged to executive nyc have the courage of essays, their convictions and speak their disagreements openly. In some cases, this does work; in others it does not. The same thing works at the level of the society. The principles by essay writing competition, which the society functions do not necessarily conform to nyu stern langone the principles stated. Ums! Those in power may covertly allow the nyu stern essays, use of force to suppress debate in order to remain in time series forecasting thesis, power. (death squads are an nyu stern example.) In some organizations, dissent may be rewarded by termination-the organizational equivalent of death squad action. Executive Resume! In others, a group member may be ostracized or expelled. Group members quickly learn the operating values , or they don't survive for long. To the langone essays, extent they differ from stated values , the series thesis, organization will not only suffer from doing things less effectively, but also from the cynicism of its members, who have yet another reason for mistrusting the leadership, or doubting its wisdom. VALUES PROVIDE THE BASIS FOR JUDGMENTS ABOUT WHAT IS IMPORTANT FOR THE ORGANIZATION TO SUCCEED IN ITS CORE BUSINESS.

So, there are some disconnects, and these disconnects create problems. However, the central purpose of values remains. They state either an langone essays actual or an idealized set of criteria for evaluating options and essay deciding what is appropriate, based on long experience. The relevance of the Army's values , for example, is apparent. When soldiers may be called upon to expose themselves to mortal danger in the performance of their duty, they must be absolutely able to trust their fellow soldiers (to do their fair share and to help in the event of nyu stern, need) and their leaders (to guard them from galloway gaming unnecessary risk). So the Army's values prescribe conditions that facilitate trust, a necessary element in willingness to face danger.

Without trust, risk tolerance will be low, as will combat effectiveness. TO BEHAVE ETHICALLY IS TO BEHAVE IN A MANNER THAT IS CONSISTENT WITH WHAT IS GENERALLY CONSIDERED TO BE RIGHT OR MORAL. ETHICAL BEHAVIOR IS THE BEDROCK OF MUTUAL TRUST. So how do values relate to ethics , and what do we mean by ethics? One of the keys is in the phrase we quoted above from the DA pamphlet: Values are what we, as a profession, judge to be right. Individually or organizationally, values determine what is right and what is langone essays wrong, and doing what is right or wrong is what we mean by ethics. To behave ethically is to behave in a manner consistent with what is essay competition 2011 right or moral . Nyu Stern! What does generally considered to be right mean? That is a critical question, and part of the difficulty in deciding whether or not behavior is resume service ethical is in determining what is right or wrong. Perhaps the first place to nyu stern look in determining what is right or wrong is society. Virtually every society makes some determination of morally correct behavior.

In Islamic countries, a determination of essay writing my holidays, what is right or moral is tied to religious strictures. Langone Essays! In societies more secular, the influence of religious beliefs may be less obvious, but still a key factor. In the United States much of what is believed to be right or wrong is based in algorithmic, Judeo-Christian heritage. The Ten Commandments, for many people, define what is morally right or wrong. Societies not only regulate the behavior of their members, but also define their societal core values. Life, liberty, and nyu stern the pursuit of happiness represent core American values. Experience often has led societies to develop beliefs about what is of value for the common good. (Note that societies differ from algorithmic one another in the specifics, but not in the general principles.) One example is the notion of reciprocity. Essays! (One good deed deserves another.) Another is the notion of good intent. (A gentleman's word is his bond.) Yet, a third is the notion of appreciation of merit in others regardless of personal feelings. (Give the Devil his due.) These all contain implied shoulds about how people interact and behave toward one another in groups, organizations, and societies.

These shoulds define collective effort because they are fundamental to trust and to which cognitive do with your ability to judge critique team relationships that entail risk. Nyu Stern Langone Essays! The greater the potential risk, the more important ethical practices become. Organizations, to aqa french coursework some extent, define what is right or wrong for the members of the organization. Ethical codes, such as West Point's A cadet will not lie, cheat, or steal, or tolerate those who do, make clear what the organization considers to be right or wrong. Nyu Stern! To quote again from the which of the cognitive skills in critical thinking has to your, DA Pamphlet, Values: The Bedrock of Our Profession, statements such as : Loyalty to the Nation, to the Army, and to the unit is essential. Selfless service puts the welfare of the Nation and the accomplishment of the assigned mission before individual welfare. All who serve the Nation must resist the temptation to pursue self-gain, personal advantage, and self-interest ahead of the collective good.

[Integrity] is the basis for trust and confidence that must exist between the nyu stern langone, leaders and the led. Furthermore, integrity is demonstrated by executive, propriety in one's personal life. are unequivocal statements of what the Army considers to be ethical behavior. What does generally considered to be right mean? All one needs to do is to look at the positive values of society and nyu stern essays the organizations one belongs to, and what is right or wrong should be evident. There is another aspect to essay writing spent be considered, however, and that is the influence of societal or organizational norms.

Norms are the unstated rules, usually informally reached by the members of a group, which govern the behavior of the group's members. Norms often have a greater effect on langone essays what is and which of the cognitive in critical ability critique isn't done by the members of a group than formal rules and nyu stern langone essays regulations. The reason norms are important for a discussion of ethics and values is that norms may allow or even encourage certain behavior as OK that is not in keeping with society's or an organization's stated values. When there is a disconnect between stated and operating values, it may be difficult to determine what is right. An example might be a company that has among its stated values to treat everyone with dignity and respect, but whose norms have permitted and perhaps even encouraged a pattern of forecasting, sexual harassment over a number of nyu stern langone essays, years. Aqa French Coursework! Do those in the organization know that the behavior is wrong, but condone it nevertheless? Is it clear to essays the Bosnian Serbs that ethnic cleansing is unethical and wrong, or would it fall under the mantle of service nyc, behavior that is considered to be acceptable in that society? Listen to the arguments in support of ethnic cleansing that have been made, and you will find that many of the perpetrators argued that they did nothing wrong, and were only righting previous wrongs done to them. If ethics and langone morality are important for groups and organizations, they should also be important for public officials, and for very much the same reasons. York Willbern, in an article entitled Types and Levels of Public Morality, argues for six types or levels of morality (or ethics) for public officials.

By public officials, he means those who are in policy making positions in public institutions; in other words, strategic decision makers in the government, including the national security arena. Aqa French Coursework! The six levels he differentiates are: basic honesty and conformity to law; conflicts of interest; service orientation and procedural fairness; the langone essays, ethic of democratic responsibility; the executive service nyc, ethic of nyu stern essays, public policy determination; and the ethic of compromise and social integration. WILLBERN'S LEVEL OF PUBLIC MORALITY. ETHIC OF COMPROMISE AND SOCIAL INTEGRATION ETHIC OF PUBLIC POLICY DETERMINATION ETHIC OF DEMOCRATIC RESPONSIBILITY SERVICE ORIENTATION AND PROCEDURAL FAIRNESS CONFLICT OF INTEREST BASIC HONESTY AND CONFORMITY TO LAW. BASIC HONESTY AND CONFORMITY TO LAW. The public servant is service morally bound, just as are other persons, to tell the truth, to nyu stern langone keep promises, to respect the aqa french coursework ums, person and nyu stern langone the property of time series, others, and to abide by the requirements of the law (Willbern). In many ways, this level only describes the basic adherence to moral codes that is expected of all members of langone essays, a group or society.

There are some basics of essay writing how i my holidays, behavior that are expected of all if a society is to function for the collective good. For public officials, there is an additional reason why it is important to langone essays adhere to essay writing how i these basic moral codes and langone laws: they have more power than the average member of the society, and executive resume service nyc hence more opportunity for violation of those codes or laws. There also is the negative example that misconduct by public officials provides. CONFLICT OF INTEREST. This relates to public officials, because it deals with the conflict between advancing the public interest, which a public official is charged to do, and advancing one's self-interest. The duty here is to ensure that the public interest comes first, and that one does not advance his own personal interest at the expense of the public.

Willbern uses embezzlement of public funds, bribery, and contract kickbacks as examples of pursuing personal interests at the expense of those of the public. The requirements for public officials to divest themselves of investments that might be influenced by the performance of their duties (or put them in trust) and to recuse themselves in situations where they have a personal interest are designed to help public officials avoid conflicts of interest. Ultimately, it still comes down to the individual making an ethical decision. Avoidance of conflict of interest is often difficult because it is often hard to separate personal and public interests, and because individuals as private citizens are encouraged to pursue private interests through any legal means. Essays! One of the areas where there is the greatest potential for conflicts of essay writing how i, interest is where public officials deal with private organizations which are pursuing their private interests, and langone essays where any decision by a public official on allocation of resources will favor some private interest.

The fields of time forecasting thesis, government contracting and acquisition are two areas where the nyu stern langone essays, possibility of conflicts of interest is high. SERVICE ORIENTATION AND PROCEDURAL FAIRNESS. This level relates closely to the last, and deals with the responsibility of public officials to ensure their actions serve the public, and that the power they wield is used only for that purpose. It is easy to abuse the power that comes with public office. Procedural safeguards are designed to prevent that abuse. The moral obligation of public servants is to follow established procedures, and not to use their power to circumvent those procedures for their own convenience or benefit.

Power must be used fairly and for the benefit of the public. Essay How I Spent My Holidays! One can again think of examples of public officials who have violated this moral charge by using their influence and nyu stern langone power for their own benefit or for galloway, the benefit of special interest groups, or who have circumvented established procedures for essays, their own benefit or convenience. Of The Cognitive Skills Thinking Do With To Judge! One frequent example is the use of government vehicles or aircraft for nonofficial business. These first three levels of public morality share one important characteristic: they all relate to the behavior or conduct of public officials. These three levels are the areas that get most of the attention in discussions of ethics, this is where public officials are most likely to get in langone essays, trouble. However, there are three additional levels of public morality equally important. Executive Resume! These deal with the content of what public officials do, the moral choices involved in deciding what to nyu stern langone do, in pursuing the purposes of the state and the society (Willbern). THE ETHIC OF DEMOCRATIC RESPONSIBILITY. Given that public officials are operating within a democratic system, they either are elected by the people or appointed by an elected official.

This confers upon them the obligation to carry out the will of the people. However, public officials also have the responsibility to make moral choices consistent with their own values, and that may be in conflict with what they perceive to be the will of the people. Willbern contends that the public official acts according to his or her own judgment, rationalizing that it would be the will of the people if they were well enough informed on the issue. Coursework Ums! To give one example of langone essays, this level of public morality, consider whether or not the representative in Congress is morally bound to support policies and legislation which his constituents overwhelmingly support but he personally opposes. THE ETHIC OF PUBLIC POLICY DETERMINATION. This level involves the most difficult ethical choices, because it concerns making moral judgments about aqa french ums, public policies. The responsibility is to essays make moral policies; the difficulty is in determining how moral a policy is. Public policies almost always deal with very complex issues, where ethical choices are rarely clear, and it is often difficult to determine if a policy is coursework ums right or wrong. For example, many public policies deal with the distribution of limited resources. Is it right or wrong to slash funding for one program, or to increase funding for nyu stern, another?

In almost any decision, there will be winners and losers, and which of the in critical thinking has to do with your to judge critique there will be some benefit for some and cost to others. Right and wrong may not apply. Equity and nyu stern fairness are important considerations, but not always easy to discern. The determination of how much funding to executive resume nyc provide for national security, and langone which social programs to fund, involves ethical choices of the most difficult type. What is the thinking to judge critique, difference between equality and equity? Consider the controversy around affirmative action programs: are they examples of moral public policies? THE ETHIC OF COMPROMISE AND SOCIAL INTEGRATION. This final level deals with an area not as salient as some of the others.

It deals with the necessity for compromise in a society. A society with irreconcilable differences on fundamental issues will be torn apart. Hence, it becomes a moral obligation of public officials to engage in give and take, working toward compromise in the policies they develop. Langone! One often sees legislators in our political system establishing positions where they may not get all they want from executive particular legislation, but will settle for some of what they want. Willbern contends that compromise, rather than standing on langone essays principle, is aqa french coursework ums moral, because without compromise there will be discord and conflict, and essays disintegration rather than integration of the society. Public officials are given the aqa french, trust of the public to develop and carry out policies that are in the public's best interest.

Living up to this trust has a significant impact on the national will; public confidence is essential to the exercise of national power. Public officials have a moral duty to act in a trustworthy manner. Why, then, do individuals behave unethically? One reason is the complexity of the issues leaders deal with, and langone essays the difficulty in many instances of determining which is the most ethical alternative. Aqa French! There are several systemic factors. One is the competition for scarce resources. It is easy to slip into nyu stern essays unethical acts to gaming essays algorithmic culture gain a competitive advantage in the race for position or power.

A second is conflicting loyalties, which Johns labels the nyu stern langone essays, most troublesome ethical dilemma facing public officials. The Iran Contra affair is a case of unethical behavior on essay how i spent my holidays the part of langone essays, North, Poindexter, Secord, and McFarlane because of misplaced loyalty to the executive chain of cognitive skills in critical thinking do with your ability to judge, command. Johns also identifies systemic factors in groups and teams which can lead to unethical behavior. One is groupthink , which can occur in a homogeneous group with a strong leader. A second is the presence of idealogues: individuals who view their own extreme positions as right and any opposing positions as wrong. A third is the organization's response to dissent. Essays! There are few incentives for whistleblowers or those who try to expose unethical behavior in organizations. Essay Competition! Organizational norms encourage going along and discourage questioning the unethical actions of others.

This can quickly compromise ethical standards in any organization. CAUSES OF UNETHICAL BEHAVIOR. COMPLEXITY OF STRATEGIC ISSUES OBSCURES ETHICS COMPETITION FOR SCARCE RESOURCES/ POWER/POSITION CONFLICTING LOYALTIES. GROUPTHINK PRESENCE OF IDEALOGUES NEGATIVE ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSE TO DISSENT. Kenneth R. Andrews, in Ethics in Practice, contends that there are three aspects to ethical behavior in organizations: the development of the individual as an ethical person, the effect of the organization as an ethical or unethical environment, and the actions or procedures developed by the organization to encourage ethical behavior and nyu stern discourage unethical behavior. INFLUENCES ON ETHICAL BEHAVIOR. PRIOR DEVELOPMENT OF INDIVIDUAL AS ETHICAL PERSON. THE ORGANIZATION AS AN ETHICAL ENVIRONMENT. PROCEDURES THAT ENCOURAGE ETHICAL BEHAVIOR. Most of an essay my holidays individual's ethical development occurs before entering an organization.

The influence of family, church, community, and school will determine individual values. The organization, to a large extent, is dealing with individuals whose value base has been established. Nyu Stern Langone! This might imply that ethical organizations are those fortunate enough to bring in ethical individuals, while unethical organizations brought in unethical people. But it is not that simple. While the internalized values of individuals are important, the of the skills thinking has to ability to judge, organization has a major impact on the behavior of nyu stern langone, its members, and can have a positive or negative influence on which of the cognitive skills has to your to judge their values. One example of the development of ethical individuals is the service academies. In their admissions processes, the academies attempt to get individuals of good character with the values integral to the military profession. Nyu Stern! However, the academies also recognize that their core values may be different than those prevalent in society, and they devote considerable effort to the development and internalization of their core values. As is evident from periodic breaches of integrity at the academies, e.g., cheating scandals, these attempts to instill core values do not always succeed. There are three qualities individuals must possess to aqa french coursework ums make ethical decisions. The first is the ability to recognize ethical issues and to reason through the ethical consequences of decisions.

The ability to see second and third order effects, one of the elements of strategic thinking, is very important. The second is the ability to look at alternative points of view, deciding what is langone right in aqa french coursework, a particular set of circumstances. This is langone essays similar to the ability to reframe. Essay Writing In Pakistan 2011! And the third is the ability to deal with ambiguity and uncertainty; making a decision on the best information available. ATTRIBUTES FOR ETHICAL DECISIONS.

SEEING SECOND- AND THIRD-ORDER CONSEQUENCES-WARGAMING ETHICAL CONSEQUENCES OF DECISIONS SEEING ALTERNATIVE POINTS OF VIEW-REFRAMING DEALING WITH AMBIGUITY AND UNCERTAINTY-MAKING DECISIONS WITH BEST INFORMATION AVAILABLE. As important as these individual characteristics are, the influence of the organization is nyu stern langone essays equally important. The ethical standards that one observes in the organization will have a significant effect on individual behavior. People will do what they are rewarded for doing (Andrews). The organization has its greatest impact in the standards it establishes for ethical and unethical conduct in its formal reward systems. Informal norms also have a strong influence on individuals' behavior as do the actions of the leaders of the organization. Resume Service Nyc! Strategic leaders must understand that their actions, more than words alone, will determine the operating values in the organization.

The influence of the organizational context is underscored in langone, Why Be Honest If Honesty Doesn't Pay? In this article, Bhide and Stevenson note that there often are no economic or other incentives to time thesis encourage ethical behavior and discourage unethical behavior. They contend that it most often is the dishonest individual who gets ahead, and that cases where unethical behavior was punished are far outweighed by those in which there either were no consequences or unethical behavior was rewarded. The Gordon Ghekkos of the world (the unethical corporate executive played by Michael Douglas in the movie Wall Street) often get ahead, because they rarely are held to nyu stern essays account for their actions. While these observations might lead one to a cynical view of ethics in organizations, Bhide and Stevenson come to a different conclusion. They see room for optimism despite the lack of financial gain for ethical behavior, or the absence of negative consequences for unethical behavior. Their reasoning is based in the fact that so many people do behave ethically, in thesis, spite of the apparent lack of gain. Ethical behavior must be intrinsically rewarding; and most people behave ethically because it's the right thing to do.

People are guided by essays, their personal value systems. They often choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong specifically because of their intrinsic values of what is right. Bhide and Stevenson make this caveat: We should remember, however, that this. works only as long as most of executive resume nyc, us live by langone essays, an honorable moral compass. Since our trust isn't grounded in self-interest, it is fragile. And, indeed, we all know of organizations, industries, and even whole societies in which trust has given way either to a destructive free-for-all or to inflexible rules and bureaucracy. Only our individual wills, our determination to do what is right, whether or not it is profitable, save us from which of the skills in critical thinking your ability to judge choosing between chaos and stagnation. Chaloupka, in Ethical Responses: How to Influence One's Organization, asserts that organization members have only three choices when confronted with unethical behavior: exit, voice, or loyalty. Exit is the most direct response: if you can't live with behavior that does not meet your own ethical standards, leave. However, exit is langone not only a direct response, it is a final one, so the personal and organizational consequences must be considered.

The most important personal consequences are the costs. Where do you go from there? What other options are available? How marketable are you? Can you afford the financial loss? There are specific organizational consequences as well. Series Thesis! Will the ethics of the organization's leaders change?

Will they do business with someone else who doesn't have the high standards you do? In leaving, one gives up the ability to influence the essays, organization directly. When considering exit, one must ask, Could I have had more of an impact by remaining in the organization and trying to change it from within? Voice . This means expressing discomfort with and opposition to the observed unethical behavior. Aqa French! To whom do you voice your objections? The obvious choice is your supervisor. Langone Essays! But what if your supervisor condones the unethical behavior, or worse, is ums its source? You may be jeopardizing your position, and maybe your membership in the organization.

A second choice is to go to senior management. This also has potential risk. The senior leadership may be condoning or even directing the unethical behavior. This action may bring your loyalty into question. If so, your objections may be covered up or ignored, and you may end up being forced out of the organization. On the other hand, it may be that the senior leadership is unaware of the unethical behavior, and you may have initiated an organizational response eliminating unethical behavior and restoring ethical standards. A third option is to go public, to engage in whistleblowing.

This is also risky, because it can lead to reprisals with negative consequences. The level of langone, risk depends on the commitment of the organization to ums high ethical standards and on its willingness to encourage whistleblowing in its own best interests. Many organizations have shown commitment to ferreting out unethical individuals and maintaining high ethical standards by establishing procedures for anonymous reporting of langone essays, ethical breaches and safeguards to protect whistleblowers. Exit and voice may be combined. An individual resigns in protest and goes public with his or her reasons for leaving. This leaves the individual vulnerable to the label of an employee who quit before being fired, but it also can lead to increased credibility as someone acting on conviction in spite of personal cost. Exit combined with voice is aqa french most effective if taken by someone at the upper levels of the organization. An organization can more easily ignore the nyu stern langone essays, exit + voice of a lower level employee than it can the of the in critical has to do with your ability, resignation of a strategic leader, followed immediately by a press conference.

The widely publicized resignation of former President Bush from the National Rifle Association over what he viewed as extreme actions is an example of essays, exit combined with voice. It undoubtedly had a much greater effect on the NRA than the forecasting thesis, resignation of langone essays, someone less well known and respected. The resignation of James Webb as Secretary of the Navy is another example of effective exit combined with voice. Loyalty . The final response to unethical behavior in an organization is loyalty. Which Of The In Critical Thinking Has To Your Ability Critique! This is the alternative to exit. Instead of leaving, the individual remains and tries to nyu stern change the organization from within. Loyalty thus discourages or delays exit. Loyalty also may discourage public voice, since being loyal to the organization means trying to aqa french coursework ums solve problems from nyu stern langone within without causing public embarrassment or damage. Loyalty can also encourage unethical behavior, particularly in organizations which promote loyalty above all.

These organizations discourage exit and voice, and basically want their members to go along with organizational practices. An interesting question is, Can an individual be loyal to an organization by engaging in exit or voice as a response to unethical behavior? Chaloupka maintains that both exit and voice must exist for continued organizational effectiveness. Additionally, an organization cannot maintain high ethical standards without mechanisms for eliminating unethical behavior. Also, loyalty is not always a virtue.

Loyalty should be predicated on the organization's ethical demonstration that it is worthy of loyalty. If the organization condones unethical behavior, it relieves the individual of any responsibility to be loyal. BUILDING AN ETHICAL CLIMATE. How can the strategic leaders of an organization build an ethical climate? Andrews suggests a number of steps that foster corporate ethics. First are the actions of the strategic leadership and gaming algorithmic the way they deal with ethical issues.

The pattern of essays, top leaders' behavior determines organizational values. Essay How I My Holidays! A second step is to make explicit ethics policies. Ethical codes are one common example. The next step is to increase awareness of how to apply those ethical codes. Training on how to deal with situations with an ethical dimension, and how to anticipate situations that involve ethical choices, can go a long way toward ethical institutional practices. Another step to nyu stern essays increase the salience of ethics is to resume expand the information system to focus on areas where ethics may come into play. Knowing what actually is going on in the organization is essential to understanding the ethical principles which govern behavior. The information system should also support ethical behavior, and allow the strategic leader to know when or where there are potential ethical breaches so that corrective action can be taken. The real danger is essays that when unethical behavior is unnoticed, or not punished, members will assume it is condoned by the organization's leadership. Establishing moral principles means determining the core values which should guide the organization.

O'Brien suggests four for consideration: localness, merit, openness, and leanness. Resume Service! By localness, he means adopting a philosophy of pushing power down to essays the lowest level possible, and essay competition in pakistan 2011 encouraging initiative and autonomy. By merit, he means directing actions toward the overall goals of the organization, and nyu stern essays what is best for all. Coursework! By openness, he means being forthright and essays honest in all dealings. And by has to, leanness, he means efficient use of resources and economies when possible. ULTIMATELY, THE QUEST FOR ORGANIZATIONAL TRANSFORMATION MUST BEGIN WITH A PERSONAL COMMITMENT WITHIN EACH INDIVIDUAL TO PURSUE MORAL EXCELLENCE. Encouraging leaders to pursue their own moral development is critical at higher levels because strategic leaders set the moral climate for the organization. Nyu Stern Langone! O'Brien believes that moral development is even more important than professional development. Creating a culture based on moral excellence requires a commitment among managers to embody and develop two qualities in their leadership: virtue and wisdom. However, creating an organization characterized by moral excellence is a lengthy process.

It involves changing organizational culture, discussed in the next chapter.

Parabens me ajudou muito. Ola Ana Augusta, tudo bem?

Isso e so minha opiniao.

Espero encontra-la pessoalmente! Podem me ajudar? Preciso saber qual e o indice de evasao mensal aceitavel no mercado. Ola Marta, boa tarde! =D. Obrigada pela visita e comentario.

Sua pergunta e realmente interessante. Nyu Stern Langone.
